Yeah but down equals warmth. You can stay dry easily in snow in comparison to rain. The guys that sleep in sub zero temps don't use synthetics

If he's car camping it won't be an issue. If not, a good waterproof dry bag takes wet out of the equation. I use the sea to summit e vent bags.
I carry 3 and my tent, bag, and clothes have never been wet.

Check out Wiggy bags. I spent 10 days above the artic circle in one. If weight is not an issue get the full size not the mummy

Dry bag question, I sweat in Gore Tex, how well do they breathe?
I thought the sexiness of down was weight and compactness, why would it be warmer than the best synthetics?

And it doesnt lose its rating nearly as quickly. Synthetics and climasheild for the most part once compressed start to lose their rating from the first time and quickly from that point forward. You also need a lot of climashield to get the needed loft for good warmth once you get really cold.
Great for jackets and such, not so much for bags, IMO

If you sweat a lot, its best to use a liner and have treated down. But unless you are just raining sweat, its not going to hurt you that much

are you bringing that to keep the bag clean, or for added warmth?
Mainly for a cleaner bag but a little warmth. If it’s hot out, skip the bag and just take a liner

Been looking at the loco libre quilts. Anything wrong with a duck down saver series?

Nope the just use a lesser grade of down. I think 800 or something.
If you have specific questions email them. They are great. One of my underquilts is from them.

No need to split hairs on this. There are probably a thousand bags that will suffice for your excursion.
When considering temp rating, remember wind chill. Also, if it's really, like really cold, change all the way down to your skin before going to bed. Sweat moistened clothing isn't your friend when trying to keep warm.
Which would you rather? Unzipping a colder rated bag a little because you're warm, or wishing you got the colder rated bag while you try to get the feeling back in your extremities?
Remember this. Down sucks when it's wet.

Buy a cot if y’all are truck camping, it will be like sleeping at home

I have a Enlightened Equipment 0 degree quilt. Lightweight, warm, well made, but not cheap. For my trip in October we are taking a pack team in so also have a heavy canvas synthetic 0 degree bag since I'm not carrying it in.

I got a surplus Italian modular bag. It was like 50 bucks and kicks arse.

I ended up getting a loco libre saver 10°. It was single digits most of the time we were in MT. We camped out when it got into the 30s during the day. I don’t remember how cold it was but I only froze my arse off when I would slide off the mat or if a body part was off the mat and on the ground.

The cold ground will suck the life out of you...
Hope you had a good trip. Some spam bot bumped this thread yesterday. They deleted his post, though

Yep, completely miserable. I will gladly deal with carrying the extra ounces to sleep on an XL insulated pad. I have friends who just use 3 folds of a thermarest zlite under their torso. I don't know how they sleep like that.

Agree. I used a klymit insulated pad. I’m 5’6” 200lbs and it was borderline too skinny. Will definitely upgrade to a wider pad. I also need a means to keep the pad from sliding. I’d lean one way and the pad would fly out from under me the other

If you’re using it in 30 degree weather I’d get a 15 degree bag
All of this, especially if you're going down over alternative.
The Nemo Sonic 0 is rated for 0 (thus the name) and sells for under $400. Probably a tweener.
Feathered Friends Swallow 20 looks to be a nice bag for the money. Under 2 pounds, rated to 20 degrees, should get it for under $450.
