Don't know why, but I thought of this fella when I read this...

Can't wait. This will be our trial year. I plan on going balls to the wall next year, now that I have the equipment.

That's not goat weed. The small black seeds are usually Johnson Grass that has matured that doves are eating on the side of the roads.

Goat weed is the best. Unfortunately most folks don't want it in their pasture so they kill it. But if you can, find a way to promote it, then clip it a little at a time leading up to opening day, you will smoke'em.

Doves like bare ground, so y'all that are planting crops, be sure to keep em clean/weed and grass free.

As far as the planting dates, I've never had any problems. In MS as long as it is an accepted agricultural practice your good. I'm a farmer, I can't help if I'm a bad one! The only thing that is stressed to me is to not shoot over corn or piles of wheat. Ive found that in most cases, just ask a game warden and he'll shoot ya straight. But what one may let slide another might bust you for.

Around here, it's never ready until second split. I've seen them come to it as if bags of wheat were laid out though.

Update: Marston's has it and they're open until 6.

Glad I could he'p! How much $ per bag?

What does goat weed look like? Every time I try to google this I get some kind of natural dick enhancement product or something like that.

There are a few fallow deer plots on my property and I was thinking about bush hogging and raking them. I've heard this will attract doves.

Ive worked on dove fields for years, we normally have some goat weed and wheat growing during the summer. Starting mid july we just start cutting it all as low as we can go and disking strips about 30yds wide across the field. We then start putting out some grains for the dove. We load the field up and keep seeding it until about the 2nd week of august, then the weekend before we burn the field off and disk it one last time and always had good results. Dove love clean ground and dirt, a fresh burnt/disk field is a doves dream

I guess I'll have to pay Mr. Marston a visit shortly before turkey season. How much area will a 50# sack cover?
