Picked 11 lbs of purple muscadines this week and 18 lbs of bronze fry muscadines.

My old man is gonna make some jelly with the purples (but only needs 5 lbs or so). I looked into making wine with the others, but it seems like a pretty big undertaking. Curious of anyone does it and would make some if I supplied the fruit? Or if I got the equipment, would give me a lifeline when I had questions? LOL.

Going to post on Garden & F&D, too

Thanks OB

Are you in Baton Rouge? LA Homebrew is a great resource for equipment/knowledge. I've used muscadines in beer quite a bit (mostly wild ales/mixed fermentation type sours) with good results but it's always been my understanding that muscadines are a sub standard grape for wine making purposes. My dad has a swedish juicer ( LINK) that he uses. He freezes the muscadine juice in ice cube trays then bags it. He eats them like Popsicles.

I have kept a couple vines. I end up with about 30lbs of Carlos grapes/year. I havent been around the last couoke if years and moved, so im going to miss a couple of years of production.

I used a kit from the internet and eventually got some bigger/better gear. But the starter kits worked pretty well.

Im going to scale up at my next home and grow a lot mkre grapes. The next piece to buy is a press. Doing it by hand is a chore.

You growing them? I've got some vines going in this fall. I've got a local source that I buy them from but, no wine making here though.

Easy to do but 6 pounds won't yield much in my experience...I think I was told once here in Washington state it is about 3 pounds per liter....

I’ve got 18 lbs of the Frye/bronze harvested this morning... after counseling wife, we aren’t gonna make wine.

Would be willing to give these to anyone that would return me some product when it’s ready tho.

Been looking into starting next year. Got some vines I planted in 2019 that should yield enough to make it worthwhile starting next year. What resources do yall recommend reading?

I think I end up with about 750ml/lb.

If you are on Facebook there is a muscadine growers Facebook page that is a wealth of information. From backyard growers to big time vineyards, everyone is willing to share info and help answer questions.

That ain't too bad....I'd bet that 3lb per liter estimate is what they harvest and includes all the grapes that aren't used for whatever reason...that was a big vineyard and they probably waste about as much as they use just in their processes

Jack keller's wine blog.

Loads of good info. Website seems to be down now, but you can still view it through the way back machine.
