What's with all this "civilian" talk? Is everybody on this board a cop or in the military? Because if not....

That would be incorrect sir. "Civilian" can also mean "outsider". You know, like a Dawg fan in California talking with coonasses from Louisiana...carry on.

You can own an AR tomorrow, for the right price I'll make you a deal.

virtually any gun can/will kill you if it's pointed at you and someone pulls the trigger. that isn't the issue here. do you honestly think an AR is a good platform for someone with no experience to learn with?

First off the guy does have a tad bit of experience, but let's just say he didn't. I have no problem with him getting an AR as his first gun. You act like it's some special gun and if it's not handled right it will set off a nuclear explosion. It's just a damn semi automatic rifle dude that's decked out with cool shite. Now since an AR is nothing but a semi auto rifle, why is it any more dangerous to handle than say a remington model 742 semi auto 30-06, or is it? Why is it any different than a ruger10/22 that is a semi auto rifle, or is it?

The point is any dumbass can grab any gun and screw up and kill somebody. The chances of that happening with an AR aren't any higher than they would be with any other semi auto rifle. Again the AR isn't some special gun that does all kind of other cool shite like firing rockets, it's a damn semi automatic rifle that looks cool, nothing more nothing less when it comes to it being more dangerous for a beginner..

Settle down there boss. I think all he was getting at is an AR is not an ideal first rifle to own.

They are expensive for one thing. The guy doesn't need to drop a grand on his first gun.

Another thing is they are fairly complicated. They are relativity difficult to operate, and kinda a pain in the arse to clean.

They are also more dangerous than a .22 LR just because I can kill you from farther away with a 5.56 nato than a .22 lr.

Nobody here is against this guy buying whatever rifle he wants. Just trying to give him some sound advice to make an intelligent first purchase.

Now that I am of age what is the process to buy a assault rifle? Do I need a permit/ go through a course?

Anyone over 18 that can pass the background check can walk out of any gun shop with a brand new AR-15 in less than an hour. No training required. Hell I have been quite scared around some that have had training provided by uncle sam If you want it buy it. It isn't rocket science and the safety is written in English. If you want something ultra simple get an AK hell even little African kids can use them.

A few people are. The point is, at some time in our lives, we were all inexperienced oh handling/operating firearms. It doesn't matter if you were 6 or 36 when you learned, it's never too late to be a responsible gun owner.

Agreed. My father taught me to use a shotgun and a bolt action rifle but everything i learned about semi-auto rifles and hanguns was self taught as he has never owned any military style rifles. Just read the manual that comes with the rifle and field strip it a few times.

10/22 is nice and cheap but no different than the AR. Magazine in and pull the trigger until the mag is empty. One round is bigger than the other and one is a bit cheaper. Other than that buy what you want to learn and enjoy.
How would one learn a firearm with a 10/22 better than an AR?
Single shot firearms different story

We do it with thousands of soldiers & marines every year. It's a very easy rifle to shoot.

Lighten up.

A shotgun and a hacksaw would be much better for home defense as compared to an AR

1. Easier to use.
2. Easier to maintain.
3. Ammo/gun is cheaper
4. Easier to handle.
5. Can be shot in more places due to low caliber.
6. Quieter
7. .22 is better for learning long gun basics than anything.

Do I need to list any more?
