You can do it if you put your mind to it. I was literally in love with Copenhagen. Enjoyed every dip I ever had for many years. shite I started playing around with it in 3rd grade. About 10 years ago I just put it down one day. My kids were my motivation. They were little and playing on the living room floor. I was in my chair enjoying a dip. Something just made me stop and look at them and have sort of a revelation. I just thought, man, I don’t want to be that dad who’s kids are embarrassed of him because half my face is gone. Or worse not there for them. I still miss it sometimes but it’s not a part of my life anymore.

As i said earlier, I'm sure it's possible for someone to get oral cancer that never used tobacco products. It's also possible for men to get breast cancer, I've never met one though. No one is going to post any facts that can change my mind on this. The stuff is not safe. If you want to believe it's safe, that's fine for you.

From the Mayo Clinic,

quote:

Risk factors
Factors that can increase your risk of mouth cancer include:

Tobacco use of any kind, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff, among others

quote:

Prevention
There's no proven way to prevent mouth cancer. However, you can reduce your risk of mouth cancer if you:

Stop using tobacco or don't start. If you use tobacco, stop. If you don't use tobacco, don't start. Using tobacco, whether smoked or chewed, exposes the cells in your mouth to dangerous cancer-causing chemicals.

WebMD

quote:

Smokeless tobacco users. Users of dip, snuff, or chewing tobacco products are 50 times more likely to develop cancers of the cheek, gums, and lining of the lips.

My dad smoked since he was a teen. He quit after 25 years. He lived until 85. He said that he still reached for his shirt pocket or towards his shoulder (rolled in a t-shirt sleeve) after every meal. It was hard to quit smoking but I hear it is much harder to quit the dip. Good luck!

I'm quitting too. I dipped Copenhagen snuff all through high school playing baseball, quit for 6 years only dipping occasionally when I hunted, picked it back up in law school and had been almost a can a day of Copenhagen long cut for the last 12 years. I've been using Fully Loaded and haven't had a real dip in 6 days. Just left the dentist and had a great check up; usually after the dentist I would head across the street for a fresh can. Today I drove on back to work. It's a struggle, but like many in here have said my two little boys are going to be my motivation to stop for good

Good luck to all trying to quit. This thread makes me feel like such a piece of shite for not being able to kick nicotine. My kids are almost grown and have watched me for their whole lives. They quit asking me to quit when they were less than 10.

Been dipping or smoking for over thirty years.

Big Tobacco wants you to think it is hard to quit. Propaganda.

Yeah, there is no way in hell this is accurate. The stuff is poison.

I know many dentists that dip. They have told me about actual case studies not wedMD etc. That show increased risk is negligible. I'm not condoning anything, I recently quit myself. Merely stating fact.

Not what mine told me. He had to scrape some unusual cells from my cheek. I was chewing at the time. He was extremely worried about it. Told me to never put the shite in my mouth again.

Look, it's fact. Denying this is either willful ignorance or signs of pure crazy. That other poster has had other crazy periods here, so it's not shocking coming from him. Dude probably thinks we never landed on the moon.

Has a doctor ever ask you if you chew tobacco? Or does he ask you if you smoke? I've always wondered why they dont specifically ask if you use tobacco. Not one or the other. Anyway yeah.

Quit now, or risk the doctor telling you that you have gum cancer or throat cancer.

For me it was when the doctor told me:
You have a 3 cm to inoperable squamous cell carcinoma at the base of your tongue.
You’ll need radiation and chemo therapy.
35 radiation treatments and 3 chemo treatments later all is good.
The worst part was the radiation causing me to have a PEG tube for about 10 months.
Couldn’t eat and could barely swallow, that was the only way for any kind of nutrition.
Happy to say that was three years ago and almost back to normal.

How many dentists do you know? Who knows more than one or two dentists?

My sister in law is a dentist. While she was in school my brother and I boiled crawfish for her class' annual boil. Now they are all dentists, so I reckon I know 20 or 30.

I’m 22 and haven’t had a dip for about 1 1/2 month’s now. It’s hard because anytime I go hunting, fishing, to a football or baseball game, I really crave for a dip. It’s just a disgusting habit and I that’s how I think of it as. It’s unattractive. Don’t understand how tobacco products are legal but things like marijuana aren’t. These tobacco products do so much damage to people that it’s not even funny anymore.

Used patches to quit cigarettes plus the buddy system. Three out of four of us quit the same day. Helped knowing someone else you liked was depending on you and you for them. Used one box of patches as normal then a second box cut in half, then when half gone cut them in half again (so - in quarters).

Buy a big pack of gum. Chew it a few times and keep it in your lip like it was a dip. Helped me out a lot. I had a big bad at work, in my truck, and at the house. Going on 5 months now

I am sure it is not safe for anyone but if you have cancer history in your family then you should definitely stay away from tobacco. I know of 2 people who developed oral cancer that never used tobacco products.

quote:

only a small fraction of individuals with tobacco exposure develop cancer. The underlying hypothesis is that genetic factors may render certain smokers more susceptible to cancer than others.

This thread, especially reading it now, makes me want to dip more than anything.

I cut back a lot after I got married and went from a can a day to having to keep it in the fridge to keep it fresh. Every time I worked outside I dipped, and my mouth niw waters like a mofo when I cut the grass without one in

ETA If I hadn’t had a couple of drinks I’d go buy a can now.
