We fish at the rigolets quite a bit and think water may be too fresh at times. Is there something to test salinity? Almost like a pH strip for a pool? Would be great to do a quick test then move on to a different spot or fish it a little differently

USGS water data has sites all over the area, I typically only look at the I10 location in Lake Charles.

Download the Ponchartrain Conservancy lake & coast app. it gives you weekly reports on water quality and salinity.

Seriously though, do taste the water after you take an accurate reading. I had a college professor who could tell you within 1-2 ppt what the salinity was. Very hard to taste it under 5/6 ppt. We would check his "field calibrated" salinity tester vs. our $10k YSI water quality meter and he was never more than 2 ppt off.

Get a hydormeter at your local Petco or other pet store for about $10.
Easy to use, just dip it underwater to fill it up.

An aquarium store hydrometer and a small bucket to float it in would be my choice. May be hard to get an easy reading in a boat that’s moving around though. A refractometer may be easier to read on the boat.

Even in shallow water, the surface and the bottom may have different salinities
