Save on the gun spend on the scope. I have a JP Sauer 100XT. About $700. In .308 it shoots one whole 3 shot groups at 100yds. I have a Meopta on it. The Glass is really good. Illumination on the reticle is not great (i would skip illumination if buying again). You may want a heavier cartridge for your needs, but i highly recommend The JP Sauer and the Meopta.

You joke, but my 35 whelen has become my favorite deer hunting rifle. I have an encore, but the cva’s are nice too. It’s accurate, a lot shorter than my suppressed 28 nosler, and hits like a ton of bricks. I hand load 200gr Hammers for it, and wouldn’t be scared to take a 300-400 yard shot if I had a scope better suited for that.
I like shooting a 35 whelen so much, I currently have a 30-06 BLR at a custom shop getting an 18” carbon fiber 35 whelen barrel put on it. Putting a rugged Alaskan can on it, and Leica glass also.

Yep, it was part joke but part serious. I shot an 8 pt last season at 300 yards. It’s definitely not a handicap for primitive season.

I second the Sauer 100. Euro Optic has some deals on them right now. They are basically what Tikkas used to be before exploding in popularity.

My brother in Christ, the 280 Remington or (7mm Express) was the definition of a fad cartridge when it was released, attempting to sell people a 740 woodsmaster with a neutered mix of a 270 and 30-06. The marketing behind it is one of the best examples of why Remington went bankrupt, behind maybe only the 6mm REM as an embarrassing display of marketing incompetence.

I guess you’re actually right, the .280 can’t be a fad cartridge because unfortunately it never got popular to begin with.

The 280 AI has a cult following, it’s very popular with handloaders. It sits right at the point of diminishing return on powder burn and is what the 280 should have been from the beginning.

I currently hunt with a 7mm-08 and 7 mag and I almost went with a .280ai as it covered 95% of what both of those did, great ballistics and manageable recoil. A lack of abundance of factory ammo was the only thing that kept me from buying one

There’s quite a bit of factory ammo available for the 280 ai right now, considering.
I was very close to buying one, already bought a couple boxes of ammo… but I decided to go another route. Alloy casings change everything.

You can find it but what’s available is fairly expensive plus add shipping costs if you are buying online. For general hunting I like to use cheaper cup and core bullets and that’s what’s hard to find for .280ai. If I was strictly going to use bonded bullets for longer range hunting I probably would’ve gotten one.

30.06 is the best all around game rifle....abundant ammo and reasonable prices.

Man I wish. Im going through more .30-06 ammo than anything else these days and it is not cheap anymore. Even the Ole PPU soft points which I am a mega fan of have doubled in price to near $30. The hornady vintage match is $2 a pop now. Relative to everything else its still more economical than any oddball, but man nothing is cheap to shoot anymore.

I have a 243 , 270 , and a 35 whelen. I hunt with the 35 whelen most of the time . 3x9x40 Leopold scope . I just bought a 6.5 creed moor with a meopta scope . I like guns .
