It seems like everyone is mentioning rifles based on the 308 parent case:

358 Winchester = 9.1mm bullet
338 federal = 8.6mm bullet
308 Winchester = 7.62mm bullet
7mm-08 = 7mm bullet
260 Remington = 6.5mm bullet
243 Winchester = 6mm bullet
22-250 = 5.56mm bullet

In general, the smaller/lighter the bullet, the less felt recoil. So if you go softer, expect less felt recoil most of the time.

Another suggestion would be to get a 308 and just shoot light bullets in it. You can find some 110gr and 130gr 308 loads I’m sure.

A coworker wants to "move on" from a .243, one of the finest calibers for killing whitetail ever devised, and has ubiquitous ammo, for a 14 year old girl who hates recoil?

Is your coworker fricking stupid?

Sounds like a smart fella. Tired of his daughter making good shots and not getting a deer out of it.

These guys posting before me have all given you accurate info. 6.5 in either creedmoor, Grendel good whitetail round. 6.8 while a little slow good round. 260 rem, 7-08, 308 all great. I always went with the thought of- Don’t make the child and or new shooter uncomfortable with the recoil. And get them behind the gun as much as you can prior to the hunt. Good luck

Suppressor on anything you do.

I can almost bet the concussion is more frightening than the recoil

I grew up on a 6.5x55 and still love that caliber. Very mild recoil and very good terminal performance. Never recovered a bullet from a pile of dead deer. Shame it doesnt fit in a .308 action or all these other 6.5's would have been obsolete in 1896. IMO the perfect 6.5 is the original.

Bought my son a Savage Axis XP II in 7mm-08 for Christmas. He killed first deer the day after Christmas. My other son and I both shoot Weatherby Vanguard Select Series .270. All three guns are fun to shoot. Only issue with 7mm-08 is finding ammo at stores.

It does. Its called a .260 Rem and if Remington would've backed that caliber like they should've you'd see a shite ton of them in the woods today and the Creedmoor likely would've never been born. I own a 7mm-08, .260, and a 6.5 Creedmoor. And in that order is how I prefer to use them. They all 3 are fine hunting rounds

6.5x55 swedish just sounds so much cooler than .260 remington.

That's why I hate the creedmore. It doesnt do anything that hasnt been going on since the late 1800s except have a fancy name and be new.

Doesnt .260 rem have a well established following among the long range people?

I only know a few people who have one and never looked into how it performs. Seems like it would lag the swede a bit due to case capacity.

Yes a lot of people shoot it. Its ballistics are on par with the Swede. A lot of that is due to factory ammo of the Swede being held back due to older rifles if I recall

I got a Remington 700 chambered in .25-06 for my son. He has been shooting it since he was 10 and he is now 14. We shoot 117 grain federal fusion and he has shot 4 deer and 3 hogs and it definitely does the trick. Very minimal recoil.

7mm-08 or 6.5 Grendel but 243 is a heck of deer rifle. Maybe just change platforms to a bolt gun in the same caliber?
