They had a Cooper rifle that was $8,500! That thing was really something. They have a Sako 85 Classic in 300 win mag and .270. It think 300 win mag is overkill so I'm leaning toward the .270.

.270 is a great choice For a deer caliber. You'll be very happy with it.
For the amount of money you're spending though make sure you get exactly what you want. If you have to order it and wait 3 months for the caliber you want, do it.

I would personally go .300 win mag because I love the caliber but .270 is an amazing round too. Also, .300 is not overkill.

Unless you just have money to burn there's no way I'd spend a ton on a .270. Its a solid caliber but its really only good for Whitetail and hogs I guess. I'd buy something bigger that you can use on Elk or larger game like the 300 Win mag. You can always buy smaller bullets for whitetail that certainly would not be overkill. Plenty of guys shoot .300 win mags and even bigger at whitetails though.

What is the OB opinion of MEOPTA glass? I am strongly considering the MeoStar R2 2.5x15x56 when i upgrade my deer rifle. Haven't seen much glass discussion in this thread.

What? .270 is works fine on everything up to bigger bears like Brown Bear (and you could arguably kill one with a .270). Plenty of people kill elk and black bear with a .270.

with 2500 we could go to the pawn shop and spend tree fiddy on a traditional deer rifle (30-06, .270, etc.) then have a week's worth of money left for some South Texas mattress rattlers.

Just put my son in a ruger American predator 6.5 creedmore with a Nikon Prostaff 7 4x16x50mm for less than a 1000 bucks and it's a freaking tack driver. Better groups than my tikka and kimber.

Come on, you know what I'm saying and are just being ignorant here. Plenty of people kill whitetail with a .223 but that doesn't mean if you are spending $2500 on a whitetail gun that should be your first choice.
All I'm saying is that while .270 is a solid caliber, I'd go with something bigger. You can put a smaller bullet in something bigger but you can only go so big with a .270.

I'd do the opposite. Buy my once in a lifetime rifle in a caliber suited for what I hunt the most.
I'd buy a ruger American in the bazooka caliber for my once in a lifetime hunt. Or better yet, borrow a nice rifle in the bazooka caliber.
To each his own though. If you're spending your own money, get what your own self wants.
Back in the day, you would be a fool to buy a gun that you couldn't use for EVERYTHING. That's why all the old men just had one shotgun. No extra money for extra guns just for the sake of having what you wanted. How blessed we are to even have these options.

Yes, it is one of a kind. Guy flew to France and hand selected his own exhibition-grade walnut, then had it sent to Cooper for them to build a rifle. Case hardened everything, octagonal barrel, incredible scrollwork. We'll probably never sell it

Do it!

It and the Z8 are the two best hunting scopes on the market

I can't disagree with that at all if it was something more specified. I guess if you've shot everything out there and still love the caliber sure. OP should certainly do what makes him happy and not listen to us.
My opinion is just that .270 is a generic cartridge that's not great really for anything. It's not a fantastic long distance cartridge for one which is what I'd expect in an expensive gun. It's a very good light deer cartridge.
All I'm saying is there are multiple calibers you could hand load that shoot 140ish-220ish grain bullets. Personally you shoot enough and there's not much difference between a .270 to 30-06 to .300 win mag.

It is a phenomenal deer slayer. Also, what do you mean by generic? What is not generic to you?

Former teacher of mine absolutely slayed elk when he lived in Montana with his Sako in .243. Shot placement is everything.

yep... and if you don't know how to shoot it, you shouldn't be hunting with it. you're in unethical territory before firing a shot.
