I have decided to get the Sako 85 Deluxe.
Excellent choice my friend. i'm Quite jealous now...
Caliber, i would stick with someone fairly available. I got a 270wsm cuz i wanted to be a little bit different, and even though i love the round, it is frustrating not be able to to run to academy or bass pro and pick the bullet i like the most. There may be 1 option at each store.

the only "normal" calibers available in the Deluxe are 25-06, 270, 30-06, and 6.5x55
I'd be happy with any of those, tbh

I get the 270 or 6.5 out of those.

id prob go 270 with a gun to my head. 30-06 has widest load diversity, but 270 has flatter trajectory, less recoil, and a little more velocity when compared to most 30-06 loads. just read OP and for what he is doing, I'd lean 270

OP should definitely get 6.5x55
Pretty please Mr OP get the swede. Thats my dream rifle. Some people buy Rolex watches when the feel like they've hit the pinnacle of financial success. I will be buying a sako 85 deluxe in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser.

Let's talk about the Swede. I'm a very active duck hunter, but not that active of a rifle shooter....
I don't know that I've ever even seen that caliber. How hard is that going to be to find?
Does someone have one of those graphics with the different rounds side-by-side to compare?

Big stores (cabelas) and gun stores generally have it on the shelves. Wal mart and gas stations never will.
It's extremely popular in Europe and can always be ordered. I own two of them and never had a problem buying ammo. The caliber certainly isn't going anywhere. It's been a round since the 1880's and was one of the first smokeless calibers to be mass produced in europe
Performance wise, it's not impressive on paper. Usually pushing a 140gr bullet around 2400-2600 fps. It shines because the bullets are very long which lends itself to very good penetration and consistent expansion. I've shot a pile of deer with it and have never had a bullet fail to exit. Recoil is extremely mild.
Like I said earlier, if we're talking pure practicality, it's a poor choice when compared to the .30-06 or .270. Those calibers are the pinnacle of North American utility rifle caliber, along with the 308. The swede is a very cool, unique caliber that performs beautifully on deer. It's no miracle bullet and it can't conquer physics. It'll never hit as hard at 1000 yards as a .300 win mag will. It will kill the shite out of deer while being easy on the shoulder and fun to talk about around the camp fire though.

Probably impossible. Like if you ever forget a box of shells and you need to make a run to Wally World you are fricked impossible.

You are correct though. The odds of finding a box of 6.5x55mm on a Walmart shelf in this country are zero. The odds of somebody else at the camp having bullets you can borrow are zero. It is very very far away from being the most practical thing to get.
It's frickin cool as hell though.

Im guessing you dont reload, so go with a 270. You can find bullets everywhere.
If you reload you could make the 6.5 shine because here the factory ammo is weak. In Europe its loaded hotter.

.270 gets my vote.
I own.223, .243, .300blk .308, and 7mm rem mag as well and the .270 spends way more time with me in the woods. I have taken hogs/deer with all of them but the .270 is my go to round. 130 gr ballistic tips zeroed at 200 yds. Point and shoot from 0 to 225 and will hit within a 2" circle. My rifle is a late 90's vintage browning a-bolt with B.O.S.S.

Prolly right.
OP's gonna have to tell grandson about this dumbass on the message board (kid will laugh because wtf is a message board in 2065) who talked him into buying this goofy looking European metric piece of shite that nobody makes bullets for.

Went to buy the Sako 85 Deluxe today and was told it isn't imported into the US except for a handful of select dealers?

I wouldn't spend $2,500 for a deer rifle. Maybe just $1,000
Posted on 11/30/16 at 10:47 am to Howard Juneau
Didn't know that because I've never actually tried to buy one
It's a high end rifle and I doubt they sell many so it makes sense that they wouldn't import many. You'll likely have to order it.
More importantly, what caliber did you decide on?
