I’m gonna go out on a limb and say some rules were not followed here.

He was my wife’s first cousin. There is at least one other poster on here who is his first cousin also, probably more. Pretty sad stuff considering my wife’s uncle (his dad) passed away from cancer earlier this year. Hunting accidents are senseless and I will never understand how it happens.

Because he killed a guy.

Negligent homicide means no intent but still caused a death.

Does anybody know the details of what happened?

Rest in peace, Jacob.

Hunting accidents are very seldom accidental. Hunter mistaken for game, loaded gun in vehicle, know your target and what's beyond it, lack of hunter orange, etc. All covered in hunter safety courses. That's why most likely charges being filed for negligent homicide occur more often than in the past.

This is what I find kind of fishy about the whole thing. I’m almost positive Jacob hunted a lot of public land so I would’ve assumed he’d be wearing orange. Only “reason” I could see not wearing it is if they were sneaking around, but nobody got in trouble for trespassing. If you’re where you’re supposed to be, why not wear your orange while walking through the woods?

Truth is they're less of accidents than they are negligence.

None the less sad.

All of them are tragic, and it’s upsetting when someone’s gun goes off or wasn’t on safety. The lack of hunter orange is a bunch of bull shite to me. You have no business owning a gun or hunting if you are shooting at random moving shite that you don’t know what it is. This is just personal opinion and has nothing to due with the accident at hand.

I once was in a club that ran deer dogs.It was disturbing how many of the guys never put their safeties on,their excuse was they didn’t want to be fumbling with a safety if they saw a deer.
I would demonstrate how I took my safety off as I would bring my gun to my shoulder, didn’t make much impression.
Same issue with guys rabbit hunting when I had beagles.I got very selective about who I asked t go hunting with me .
I mostly just hunted by myself with my dogs.

I have always been selective, even more so after guiding and running a corporate lodge.

It astounds me the number of people that hunt under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

I only woodcock hunt with people I would trust with a key to my house.

I’ve never been around people like that. I would be around them once.

Wtf… I’ll happily admit that I’ll ease around the farm with a loaded rifle in my front seat in a minute. But I’m just tipping by myself with no one else within a two mile radius.

Just out here running around safety off in something as action packed as hunting with dogs is insane.
