I posted this on the OT but it's dying a slow miserable death. Maybe you fishing guys might appreciate it more...

As some of you may know I'm an aquarium enthusiast. Well I've been conditioning my male and female betta with each other and finally turned her loose a few days ago when she appeared to "egg up". I've kept a close eye on them and it finally happened this afternoon as the sun came through the window and heated the tank to 80 degrees.

Attached is some footage I got. This was the best clip as you can see her drop an egg and see the male catch it in his mouth at the 2:00 mark.

She (the little one is the female) may if you leave her in there. She'll eat the eggs and babies so the male may kill her to protect the bubble nest.

Once I got home from dinner she was hiding in the corner and a little beat up so I knew they were done. They were at it for over 6 hours this afternoon.

I dip netted her out and put her back in a separate tank to revive. They're actually tough little fish.

It's a hobby... something to do and care for.

It's challenging, and rewarding. Anybody can buy a fish and keep it alive, but to get a pair to spawn and raise the fry is kind of a feather in your cap in the aquarium enthusiast community.

Keep them away from the dropoff so the baraccuda doesn't eat them.

Lame Nemo reference.

Very cool. Never did that with betas. Bred up a few generations of angel fish which was pretty cool. Tried it with discus but never got them to breed. Then there's all the live birth ones that breed like cockroaches.

Love having an aquarium. Just not enough to maintain it anymore so my fish keeping is restricted to gold fish in my pond off the back porch. I have bred those but water snakes get in there and jack the frick out of them.

My mom was really into it when I was younger. She showed me a lot, but with the internet you can get all the info you need these days.

My mom never could get discus to do it either... they can be difficult just to keep.

African chiclids are a fun somewhat challenging fish to get to do it. They're the only thing I've had much success with besides live bearers.

That's what my mom has now. She has all kinds of surfaces for them to lay on, but they always spawn on the heater.

I had one rock that they loved, although the retarded ones would spawn on the glass and those would of course die or get eaten. Out of hundreds of the things I probably only got about twenty of them to full grown. Fantails. Gorgeous things.

And yeah, if you can keep discus alive, you're pretty much peaking as an aquarium owner. Getting them to spawn would be like Aquaman shite. I had some huge ones for awhile. Then one weekend I got a bad infestation of hole in the head and it was over shortly thereafter. Never tried them again although IMHO that's the prettiest freshwater fish around.

They're what I posted in the "What's your favorite fish" thread a while back when everybody was posting game fish.
