Not going to lie. The propper name "Coot" sounds almost as racist as what my dad's side of the family calls them...

It is White Perch in NE LA. Not sure where the cutoff is on where they officially become White Perch in LA but I am going to say Alec.
I hate the controversy so much that I refuse to participate in it. My last comment - I think the name used south of here is dumb AF.

Here is y'all a lil history lesson:

Sac-au-Lait - When the French explorers encountered this fish their Indian guides called them Sakli (trout) which sounded like Sac-au-lait (sack of milk), given the color of the fish in muddy waters it is easy to see the connection the French made. The name stuck. Most people in Acadiana still stay this and I use it often. So basically crappie were white trout to the local Indians and bass were green trout. Bass are still called green trout by the folks down the bayou. I have never heard anyone name them in French.

White Perch - is the other popular Louisiana term.

Essentially all of the South call them "Croppie" except Louisiana.

Anyone that calls them "Crap-ee" is a Yankee.

Specks in Louisiana are Speckled Trout.

Grew up calling crappie "specs" in North Louisiana. Now almost everyone calls them white perch. My grandfather (Winn Parish) called large mouth bass "green trout" till the day he died.

Most everyone in GA and SC calls them Crappy. And though both states have lots of yankees, this is how everyone pronounced it since my childhood in the 80's before all the yankees invaded.
