We are thinking about going for a weekend after the 4th. When does the crabbing off the beach get good? Will it be too early or is now a good time?

I read on FB that they're on the beach now. Just need to watch the moon phase and wind/tides to pick the best day

I don't see how there is a crab left on GI. This weekend it will be solid traps from one end of the island to the other.

The numbers are way down imo
Don’t get me wrong on a good day you catch as many as you want
But a lot of times we only catch 10-12 in the cages. Used to be easier
Plus the idiots that keep the pregnant ones

We just run a half dozen nets. If they are there, we catch them. If not, no biggie.

The worst is people who leave a million traps all weekend and take up tremendous amount of space.

Seems like the last couple of years they have been running a long time. Instead of late July, it's been on and off all summer.

We are hoping to go in a couple weeks. Probably going to just set out some lines with chicken necks and see what happens.

I'm not sure where yall catching at, but we and our neighbors crab every weekend on the beach. It is very slow. About 6 dozen an hour. It usually gets good early August. We did better in early June. Not seeing anyone catching on the beach.

Monday I was fishing and caught the biggest crab I’ve ever seen, whatever that’s worth. North of the island

I took Leroy yesterday morning and only caught 3 crabs. Was around mile marker 2.4.

People had tents set up everywhere but not a soul around.

Caught about 15 last weekend over 2.5 days. One cage trap and just caught some others netting off the beach bottom walking.

Crystal clear water and was the first time ever I didn’t step on a single crab all weekend. Very slow, but you can scratch out a few if you keep after em

Been crabbing in GA and SC my entire life (since I was 5) and have never seen it as bad as it is right now. Cannot catch a meal.

Third and fourth week of July, plus 1st week of August has traditionally been the best weeks for surf crabbing (for the last 30 years or so).

I try to go at least once a year to fill up several ice chest. We have a boil but the rest gets boiled and put into the freezer.
