Myself, father in law and 2 brother in law's going to Colorado for six days. We've got no plans, just a free cabin. Any ideas? Durango area.

Man let me tell you, Ice Lake Basin. The gf and I hiked it last September and it was gorgeous. We were staying at Purgatory Ski resort and enjoyed our time in Durango as well. Pictures are beautiful and they still dont do it justice. Make no mistake its a difficult hike. Lots of switchbacks initially and about 2200 ft in elevation gain to the first lake. If youre all in reasonably good shape and can spare a day its well worth your time. Took us ten hours but we stopped alot and took it all in.

We went horseback riding in Estes Park last May and it was fantastic. I also recommend white water rafting in Idaho Springs. If you do go to Idaho Springs, eat at Beau Jo's pizza. You can thank me later.

Edit: those are both a ways from Durango though..

Mesa Verde, Silverton train, lots of hiking available in the area, rafting the Animas(sp.). There's a lot to do in the Durango area, really fun place for an outdoor lover.

Memorial day weekend often means there is still lots of snow up high so plan accordingly. That said it's my favorite time of year as you can do pretty much any activity Colorado has to offer if you plan well.

Not out of the realm of possibility birds inadvertently stocked them.....

Mesa Verde Nation Park is about 45 mintues away. It is where the cliff dwelling Indians lived. We went last year, it was great.

colorado does a pretty good job of keeping the remote lakes/ponds stocked. i've made several long hike-in and fish trips. the further you hike in the better the fishing.

Hike and fish the Hermossa creek trail. Full of rainbows, brookies and cutthroat trout. Go to the upper trail head and hike downstraem for about a mile until you go through the fence gap.. It's public land from there all the way to the lower trailhead.

the 416 and burro fires did a number on hermosa creek and the area behind purgatory. OP, check on access before heading to upper hermosa.

for fishing moving water, the animas is your best option, but memorial day is going to be iffy - runoff probably won't have started by then. if runoff has begun, expect everything to be blown out. lakes at lower elevations should be accessible, like haviland and electra. maybe spud lake if the road is clear. anything further up may have snow and locked gates.

indeed, there's usually still a lot of snow memorial day weekend, and please remember that the highway up to silverton is always closed on the saturday morning before memorial day for the iron horse bicycle race.

There ain't nothin' better than mountain pizza with honey on the leftover "rinds" for dessert.
