As far as just getting a tag and making the trip, ain't nothing to it.

Can you (or anyone else that has done this), describe the process for getting a tag and figuring out where you can/want to hunt?

I see it mentioned often that your tag is for a specific unit. I'm guessing this is an area of public land that you are allowed to kill an elk in. Do you just pick a unit and put in for a tag? I assume some units are in high demand and are a long shot for out of state hunters.

Don’t look at how many elk tags there are left, you need to find the previous years success and go from there.

Many MANY units have a ton of tags and very very low odds because as said the Elk have places to go to either disappear, get to private, or other areas they aren’t huntable.

A bunch of leftover tags is very often the sign of a bad unit, not a good unit. It means no one wants them.

Given that, go! You won’t regret it.

But I assume the tags in the best unit are given out based on points, right? Don’t you have to buy points? I’m really confused on how the different states distribute tags.

Enjoy guys. A few years back I got to spend a week in a private Elk Camp with a friend of mine in Chama New Mexico at 9000 feet.. I left Louisiana it was 92 I got to camp it was 18.. with a high that day of 30. Felt amazing! The views the hunting experience just everything about it was unreal. Hearing and seeing elk bugle was something I had only seen on tv . I only had a cow tag but was able to be in on the hunt of the taking of 2 bulls. I got my cow and brought home the best meat I have ever eaten.
I’ve hunted a lot of places..more than most anyway, and this was by far my favorite.
Take it all in take lots of pictures and report back.

Yea pretty much. I think you pick 5 units and a season, tags get drawn, you either get or you dont, and then sift through the leftovers.

You need some friends who are willing to burn some cash.

dad just got back from a 3 week bow elk/bear hunt out there. had 1 either sex tag for each. Passed on several cows and had one bull at 20 yards but was a little to dark to be sure it was legal(had to have 4 on one side apparently) but he did get a pope and young class black bear. over 300lbs and over 20" skull. struck out on the elk but that was him just trying to get a really good bull could have filled his tag with a cow many times. Said they were pretty much alone until this week when the primitive draw opened and also a regular rifle draw opened too and suddenly people were everywhere and they were getting walked in on 5-6 times a day. Moved units trying to get away from the gun crowds but just more of the same so I would say expect to see plenty other hunters.

went on opening day for archery on public land near Pagosa.
Saw some cows, but was never able to get a shot off as they were a good 130 yards away. Never saw them grazing, just passing through going back to their beds in the morning. heard plenty of bugling at night, which was awesome. Saw plenty of mule deer but i didn't have a tag for them since i had one last year, and you rarely ever can get them two years in a row.

My idiot friend passed on several cows trying to get a bull, which he didn't get. Buddy that went the week after us shot a monster bull.

Had a great time, and looking forward to going back next year. If you're a hunter, backpack hunting for elk should be a bucket list thing to do in life, not just hunting.

That’s the Colorado hunt planner.

A word of warning on building points-with each passing year, points are worth less and less. There are units that you’ll never be able to build up enough points for.

+1

I'd love for a stickied thread on essentially a step by step DYI elk/mule deer hunt that covers how to get tags, equipment, preparations, etc.

Agree. I’ve given up on the point game.

If you are serious about it, I’d recommend going to a different board based on western hunting. Doesn’t really make sense for this board to have one due to the geographical location of most of the people.

Every state is different and many very different as far as obtaining tags goes.

I cant speak for the other states but if you call colorado wildlife and fisheries, they are extremely knowledgable and helpful. I would wait till after hunting season to call though, I imagine they are very busy these days.

Rokslide is where I learned everything. Also reading a ton on the Montana and Colorado parks and wildlife websites.

Getting tags is as simple as walking into wal mart and saying I need an otc either sex tag for elk.. it's just like hunting public land in La or Tx . Tons of people but most are fat asses that stay within 2 miles of the road or camp.
Dont worry about success rate because what I said factors into that. I hunted for my first time this year and had several bulls within range in some tough country ended up killing a cow. Going during the summer to scout would be helpful but not necessary.
