I never did get comfortable with climbing tree stands...had a few friends get badly injured using them and decided that I didn't want to use them, so I sold mine years ago.

but yes, I would say that you should practice a bit before hunting out of one for the first time.

A buddy and I were hunting a pretty decent sized field in Canp Lejeune several years ago. We were both in climbing stands, and we're set up in a 90 degree offset. About 9:30 I heard a pretty loud swooshing sound followed by a yell. My heart sunck as I realized my buddies stand must have slipped down the tree. He was in a pine tree and the bark came loose...down he went. No harness. Thankfully he was able to walk away with no real injuries. But it was scary for sure.

Buy a good stand and good safety equipment. Makes all the difference in the world.

Don't be afraid man. I'm sitting in my old man rite now just as comfy as could be. Every time you pull up while climbing wiggle and use your weight to assure it bites.

Bought a API marksman and had to do some tweaking(sharpening) to the teeth in order for it to bite into hardwoods. First few times I climbed with it I had trouble with it sliding down the tree when I sat down. But now I will not be caught below 20' unless hunting cottonwood Crp nor will I be in a tree without a harness.

Never set up to where it's flat. When you set up on a tree (especially a normal tree that tapers toward the top) set on an incline so it will level out as the tree tapers down. Also every slide up put weight and lightly bounce to ensure it bites. Never had a problem by doing that. Also if you want to hunt the climber but are nervous buy some safety harness equipment.

Appreciate the suggestion for a lock on. Got one and some climbing sticks and it's great!
Much better than the climber.

FT can we keep the poli board on the poli board if you don't mind? I respect your opinions and have greatly benefited from your input on he OB and I thank you for it.

If you read all of what I wrote I think you'll find that I respect the rights of all, But I strongly believe in separation of government and religion.
