I pluck most teal, woodies, and pintails. I generally breast everything else unless I have a meal in mind for plucked ducks.

Built a plucker. Bought the rubber pluck fingers from a online poultry site and attached them to the inside of a 5 gallon bucket cut bottom out of bucket put fingers in it too facing up into bucket. Attached that bottom of that bucket on a old ginder motor. Put that grindr motor with bottom on it under the bucket pretty close and turn it on throw the duck in there while its spinning slow like. Spray in there everyonce in a while with the water hose. Duck comes out plucked shiny and clean......buy twice as many fingers than you need they wear out fast....probably 40 to 50 ducks and you'll notice it dont so as good. Time to change the bad one's out.

seen someone build one with a table saw, the sawdust catcher sucked down the feathers good.

I usually pluck the breast and evaluate. If it is really torn up underneath, I breast it out so that I can clean up the breast better. If the breasts are clean, I will pluck the whole bird.

This is what I do too:

I personally don't understand those that just take the breast because I grew up always plucking. It's so much waste considering how hard we work to get them in the first place and the best flavor in a gravy comes from everything but the breast.

At worst, it allows you to breat them out quickly with the skin on the breat, which at times, can be very good to have.

Now, this won't be to scale, but will give you an idea of what I did. I can shoot a pic later and email it.

Needed:
Plywood
2X4s
Squirrel cage fan or other "blower" type fan
Motor off of table saw or similar
Belt
24" or so of shaft or cold roll steel
2 bearings that ID will work for shaft or cold rolled steel bar
Belt and larger pulley that will also fit shaft
Piece of 4" pvc pipe
Plucker fingers that can be bought online...style not really important
Old piece of window screen

Remember, dimensions probably incorrect as hell. Lol. But follow along

Build 18" wide, 24" tall, 36" long rectangular box with no top. Build legs out of 2x4s and get it off the ground 12 inches or so.

Build divider half way of box from front to back. Cut most of divider out and staple screen to the hole.

Mount blower fan in rear of box blowing out. Be sure to cut hole out of rear of box so blower can blow out.

Make lid for back half of box so that when blower is on, it pulls air from front half of box. On rear lid, attach a "lip" that goes up to catch stray feather thrown to hard to get sucked down immediately.

Mount motor underneath box.

On front of box (open end), using a hole saw, cut circles to mount bearings near top. Insert bearings and using small piece of wood on each side, affix bearings into place.

Take pvc pipe and mark and drill holes for plucker fingers. Pull plucker fingers into holes. Cap off pvc pipe with caps pre drilled with hole in center same size as shaft.

Run shaft through hole in box (one bearing will have to be out for assembly...the side with the pulley), through the pvc caps, and through opposite side bearing. There will need to be piece welded onto shaft to attach to pvc cap so that pvc spins when shaft does. Slide bearing over pulley end and put in place. Put pulley on shaft, and hook up belt to motor. Plug everything in and start plucking!

Sounds wayyyy more complicated than it is. Think this one took me about 2 hours to build. Had thought about making some smaller versions to sell. The one I have will pluck a turkey. A BIG turkey.

i'm not making fun of your set-up, but that is pretty complicated. ms mack bought me a plucking attachment from cabela's that i mounted on the shaft of a blower motor (free used one from my hvac sub-contractor). i attached a power cord with a rocker switch and went to plucking.
where we hunt it's no big deal to blast feathers all over the yard (PAC).

BP, i'll take a picture of it next time i'm in PAC and post pic

it's actually not at all, but I can understand where it'd be hard to follow along. And in your situation, I'd just do what you did and blow feathers everywhere. But I'd rather not blow the amount of feathers I do all over the yard, or be covered in them. Each have their place.

I just watched the process for waxing birds on youtube. That...is some time consuming shite right there. Hell, that's probably how breasting birds got invented! Some sorry SOB was tired of boiling water, dipping in ice, plucking most feathers but not all...eff all that!

I breast because none of the sorry frickers I hunt with take their share of ducks. Nor do they help brushing the blind, or putting out decoys, or putting gas in the boat, or bringing food to the blind.

Pluck ringnecks, teal and woodduck. breast the rest unless I'm feeling froggy. Whomever said it is impossible to pluck a diver - try breasting a ringneck - Ringnecks, actually are very tasty ducks and pluck beautifully.

Also, if they are full of pin feathers, they are getting skinned.

I'll pick nice, fat birds. If skinny flight ducks and/or full of pin feathers, breast fillets and legs only.

I'm about 50-50. Maybe a slight lean toward breasting. I breast with the skin on though. Which I strongly recommend if you're pan searing or grilling hot and fast. Which I also strongly recommend.

I breast out about all my ducks and don't have a problem with doing so. We like to cube up the breast for frying and grilling.

Yeah I would rather hunt alone than put up with that nonsense. I have a small vehicle, so I never drive, but I always bring food for everyone (usually breakfast and a snack), plenty of beer, and almost all of the decoys and gear is mine that gets used, plus I put in scouting time that some of them can't afford. Everyone ends up happy.
