Hey, don't you have a UL Abu Garcia cardinal spinning reel? How is it?

I would spend $400 on two rod n reel setups . Buy 2 Shimano Curados and a 6ft and a 7 ft All Star medium action . Spend the rest on lures tackle box etc . Academy should be able to hook you up with everything you need.

For specks and reds don't forget to pick up an assortment of egg sinkers (3/8 and 1/2 oz) for rigging Carolina, along with barrel swivels. plastic beads, and hooks. Suggest 2/0 and 4/0 Kahle hooks, treble hooks, floats such as Cajun Thunder. I probably carry $1,500 worth of artificial baits in my boat and have caught everything on shrimp under a float or Carolina the last three trips to either Leeville or Venice.

I do. My brother does as well. He has a 100 and I have a 300. No problems with them but I've heard these cheaper ones end up having problems. I'd probably get a shimano sienna if I had to get another one, I have a bigger one of those and like it. Plus price wise it's the same.

What would be a good length rod to get?

If just getting one, i'd get the 6'8" in a medium action.

I was watching some videos where the guy was talking highly of those she dogs. In terms of lures, does color matter much?
Bone, black w chartreuse head, anything with silver, chartreuse, and pink, glow.

Eta: Cecil, saltyCajun is a other great fishing forum I read.

I'm going to check their forum out. Maybe they might have a spot or two to share that I don't know about.
I'd like to really get into it soon.

If you like spinning rods and reels that right up my alley.

If you lived close to Lafayette I'd go with you to Academy and fill you tackle box/es with fresh and saltwater stuff.

Go E-Bay Abu Garcia Cardinal 502 or 503 ALBI reels. Usually $50 on E-Bay
I own 15 of them and tournament fish with them, they are solid.

As someone said ...All-Star 7' rods. ACL PRMS. I catch bass and trout with this rig and catch lots of them. Also $50.
I experimented and this is what I came up with.

Berkeley Big Game 12# in green, no matter what they tell you here Price: Cheap.

Only use braid for frogs or heavy cover.

Senko: Watermelon Red Flake
Flukes: Same color
Zoom Speed Worms: Watermelon Red magic, JuneBug Red, Black Red Flake

2/0 and 3/0 hooks.
Weights: different sizes.
Carolina Rigs

Rat-L-Traps: Blue Chrome, Crawfish color
CrankBaits: Chartreuse, browns, etc..

Spray: Garlic and Gamefish are my 2 favorites.

Saltwater: White perch jigheads 1/8 and 1/4 oz.
DOA CAL in Chartreuse. Looks like a fluke.
Small grub baits with curly tails, even Gulps: white/glow/pearl, chartreuse, other colors.

Spray: Jack's Juice shrimp..it's money

Hell yeah.
I've got a list of all the recs in this thread.
Guys, I really appreciate the help in here.

ETA:
Question, I take it as though most have a hidden honey hole that they like to fish at, but does anyone have a spot they wouldn't mind sharing info on that one could use w/o a boat?

So I love bait cast reels. Most accurate casters. Diawa, quantum and shimano for me.

6'6" or 7' med action rods. Graphite one piece.

Decent selection of following baits:

Soft worms, 4-8" long variety of colors. I like senkos.
Worm hooks and weights 2-3odd size

Crank baits like h2o, bandit and KVD

Spinner baits - I like willow blades and white, blue and chartreuse colors

Edit: this is my bass fishing list.
Make sure to get some good line to use.
Good luck.
