someone else will need to help with whether or not it would be good for trout and reds...the gear ratio is a low for my liking as far a bass fishing goes

Thanks bro
I found a 7' med action all-star, I'm thinking about what reel would go best with it

For rod and reel I'd suggest Shimano Citica (baitcast) and an Allstar. Great set up for a novice. If you go too cheap with your first reel, you will have nothing but backlashes.

If you have a friend that fishes, get him to go to Academy with you and pick out the necessities.

Freshwater:
Bass
-bullet weights
-worm hooks
-soft plastics (worms (zoom; red shad, junebug), brush hogs (watermelon red, junebug))
-crankbaits (deep diving (large bill), shallow running (square bill), lipless)
-spinnerbaits
-topwater (buzzbait/lunker lure, Pop R)

Bream/Sac-au-lait/Perch
-worm hooks
-split shot sinkers
-jig heads
-bobbers
-tube skirts (black/chartreuse, red/white, blue/white)

Saltwater
Reds & Specs
-circle hooks
-popping corks (speculizer FTW)
-gold spoons
-lead weights

That should get you started

My brother has one, it seems to hold up fine for occasional bass fishing like he does. If you're gonna be doing a lot of salt water the silver ambassedeurs will hold up better. I think it's the C3

LOVE them. Got 4 i think. Just rinse off your rod and reel after using it in salt water and you're good to go.

What size should the citica be?

I'm not really sure how to match the sizes and gear ratios for the reel.

5500. That's pretty much all my dad uses as far as baitcasters go. They're solid

Cecil... FTR, I just bought an all-star rod and shimano sedona spinning reel for <$100 at academy.

You need to jump on that all-star deal before Saturday

My budget to start is probably ~$650 to start with

dayuuuumn, son...that is a hell of a pile of fishing supplies...

I would recommend you spend half of that on a couple of good guided trips in the areas that you plan to fish...tell the guide what you are trying to do and he will talk you through all of the tackle, let you try all of his out, and show you a handful of fishing spots all in a morning or two...

then you can take a few hundy and buy what you want....

I think that's what I'll probably be doing

Originally, I was going to buy a lot of stuff, then figure it out, but I realize it'd probably be a waste of time if I didn't spend the money trying to figure out the hell I was doing first

I just got back from my local academy, they said sold out of the all-star rod deal
but I'm about to call the other one, up airline, and see what they have and maybe drive up there tomorrow.
