Thinking about reserving a cabin there this spring. How is the sac a lait fishing there? Is it worth pulling my boat from Hammond or do they rent boats there. Also I've read that the skeeters and gnats are really bad there too.

I appreciate any and all advice I can get about this place.

I disagree. Ive bass fished there many times. Usually catch at least a few. There are some big bass there. I grew up in the area, and know multiple people who have caught really well there consistantly.

Just bass?

I've never concentrated solely on bass. Mostly fish for bream

beautiful park, I recommend setting yo-yo’s over night with shiners for sac-a-lait and bass fish mornings/afternoons. To echo other posters, it is a heavily fished lake for its size, coupled with Florida strain bass it is usually a grind. In my experience average bass are larger. Reasonable expectation would be 4-8 keeper bass a day and 8-10 sacs (obviously depending on how many yo-yo’s set and how hard you grind on the bass).
No secret bait, do be afraid to throw larger 12” worms and/or 1/2oz jigs. Also square bills, senko’s, etc
Good luck

If you can catch 4 to 8 bass a day every time you fish chicot then join the bass masters now, lol! The best locals cannot do that.

I live and grew up 5 miles from the lake and have 30 years worth of experience in the lake recreational and tournament fishing. It is the most difficult Bass lake I have ever fished. It will not be worth pulling a boat that far just to roll the dice on bass fishing.

Now, sac a lait and bream can be had in decent numbers at times. There is usually a really good chinquapin bite early in the spring on the North end of the lake.

The bass and sac a lait have taken a major hit the last 2 years with the state dropping the special rules for the lake. Add to that a resurgence in the pike population coupled with a giant sylvania boom, and the fishing the worst I have seen in many years.

Up to you though. You never know on that crap hole. Don't go expecting to catch fish and you will enjoy your trip. I still chase the dragon out there a few times a month.

The fish are all in the Ville Platte sewer system.

Well damn. This was disappointing to hear. I was hoping to hear the fishing would be better.

It is a rough place to fish.
The guys who catch the large Florida bass use to go way back in the cypress trees to get them. If you have anything over a 17ft boat good luck. Hard to get around all the cypress trees. Pretty much limited to the channel.

I stayed a few nights at the cabinsz
Caught a few nice bass at dusk and dawn. It is a very hard place to fish to catch big ones.

As far as scaliat there were a lot of guys putting out yo-yo’s that did well.

In the 80’s the park was a lot easier to fish. North flats you could always catch a few. 90’s it got a lot harder. Now there are fish in there it just not worth it.

I gave up on the park as there are a lot better places to fish.

I've never fished it, but it won't be long before I get pics of a wheelbarrow full of white perch from there. A guy I know does it every February.

I think I've only skunked there one time. I've never caught a ton, but usually at least a couple. And they are usually quality fish.

I've fished Millers only once for bass. Caught a handful and won big bass in a club tournament with a 6 lbs 1 oz fish. I've been wanting to go back. I know there are some hammers in there. And I'd also like to go for sacalait one day. Maybe when Alx figures them out he can guide me.

you're better off just bringing crickets and worms to catch bream. the cabins are nice though.

Imagine fishing the dead sea after a chemical spill.

On a serious note, we used to fish there a good bit back when my grandfather was alive. IT was close to his house and his favorite place to go. We would usually pull 10 or so slabs out of there a trip but never any real meat hauls. Probably the last 6-8 years the lake has been in a serious decline.

I don't ever "try" to catch bass. I just fish for whatever is biting while watching the wife fish on the bottom for catfish.

Take your ole lady to the back of the coves. You might get lucky and catch more than fish
