I have a four pin fixed sight on my bow set out to 50 yds. Now I know the likelihood of me being faced with a shot beyond 50 is practically zero. But in the back of my mind I know I have a bow capable of reaching further. Am I stupid for wanting to change sights this close to the season to an adjustable?

After 10 years with adjustable I just went back to multi-pin site with my new bow. I do a lot of spot & stalk shooting pigs and I hated having to move the site. Never failed that the 25 yard shot distance i think I'm going to get will suddenly change when a shot presents itself at 10 yards or 50.

As for how close it is to season, I can get a new site dialed in within a couple days of shooting. I just walk outside every hour or so and take 5-10 minutes to fling a group of arrows, adjust, and come back in an hour to try again.

I like a 2 or 3 pin slider. I've never taken a shot over 40. But I practice alot at 60. Practicing at 60 has made shooting 20-40 child's play. So it's nice to slide to longer distances. With that being said, it would take no time to set up a new sight. I live in Luling and can help if you aren't too far.

Physically changing a bow sight takes no time at all. It’s just a matter of practicing enough to get used to using a slider so you don’t forget to adjust it when it’s crunch time

That's true but those sliders will have 1st, 2nd, And 3rd axis to level.

Yes don’t change it now there is nothing to gain and only have confusion and muscle memory screwed up by adding.
I too only plan to shoot 40-50 but practice out to 60 just as you said and have seen it improve my 20-40yd group. I will move to a slide so I can practice out to 80-100 but want a three pin slider so I can have the ability for long range dialing but don’t want to worry about sliding in thickets or woods.

You don’t have to pick between the two. I shoot 20,30, and 40 with my three pins. I have an indicator for my center pin and bottom pin. The top indicator on 30 is as high as my sight goes and that’s “home” where my pins are 20,30,40. I use my center pin like a dialing sight until I get to 95 or so and I have to switch to my bottom pin so my fletchings don’t hit my sight.

If I have time to dial in a hunting scenario I will dial my center pin, if the animal gets a little further, I know the yardage my bottom pin hits at.

I know people think dialing is unnecessary but I’m shooting a 440 grain arrow at 281 fps this year. It’s dropping nearly 2 inches per yard at 40 yards. If the animal is between 39 any 43, you should know which one it is and where to aim. At 50 it’s almost 2.5 in per yard. Don’t get me started on the ranch fairy setups and how much they are dropping per yard.

I’m in a similar situation. I’m just going to wait until after the season. May get a whole new bow setup. Plan on going to a 3 pin slider that way I’ll always have the 20, 30, & 40 yard shots ready. But I’d like to be able to shoot longer when practicing.

Wish we had an indoor facility for shooting. Would be some fun!
