My wife* and I just acquired a new bit of property that has a 10-11 acre open field. I'd like to plant about 6-7 acres of it in corn next year. Any recs on a planter? For a small tractor, does the Northern Tools 2 row planter do the job and hold up? For as little as I'd use it (basically, just this property and maybe one more 3 acre field), I don't want to spend a ton. But I don't want to get a piece of junk, either.

Deer corn

If sweet corn I'd just get one of those walk behind drill planters.

I bought a land pride seed spreader this afternoon.

I didn’t need a drill as I’m only working on food plots and needed just a broadcast spreader for the seed, fertilizer, lime, etc.

The land pride has a plastic hopper which is what I wanted.

I haven’t been able to find one anywhere and was driving through this small town in north MS saw they had some, stopped and bought it.

If you can find one with 51 or 71 (model number) “unit” style planters life will be a lot easier. A 7100 is a transmission driven planter which has to have a drive wheel to run the transmission. The 51 and 71 (which can be bought new now from Yetter Manufacturing) are able to be used individually. The rear covering wheel drives the planter unit.

The best planter for the money for what you want is really a Cole 12MX which has a separate fertilizer hopper. You just have to be SUPER particular to clean it thoroughly after each use or the fertilizer will eat the planter up.

You’ll have to sidedress (add fertilizer after the corn comes up) regardless, and maybe multiple times to get a decent yield. So look for a 1 or two row side dress unit.

The best and easiest route is to hire a local farmer to plant for you, but there may not be any handy. Good luck

If you’re serious about it, you need a reliable 2-row planter. There are folks that specialize in cutting down larger planters, refurbishing, and selling the smaller planters. Easy way is to buy one and have it shipped to you. Tougher route is to watch farm auctions, farm bulletins for older planters to buy. Google “2 row planter” and you’ll find some options. LINK

You can just broad cast deer corn. It doesn't have to be planted with a planter.

This. Know multiple people that do that but the plots aren’t pretty and corn is a hight maintenance crop. I’m not sure there’s a great reason to put in corn unless you just want corn, but it’s going to be an expensive and high maintenance crop just for deer.
