Wife’s 2012 VW Jetta 2.5l has been shifting rough occasionally for past year or so, mostly after long drives but never consistently. Typically on a road trip if it started acting up we could stop in for food turn the car off and the issue would go away. Engine light never comes on.

Now I noticed a few drops of motor oil on the driveway and the shifting problem is happening all the time. Engine light still not on.

Thoughts?

Sounds like could use a trans flush. And by flush I mean drop pan replace filter and replace missing trans fluid.

Are you sure that it’s motor oil? Would make more sense for it to be trans fluid

How much mileage and service record?

156k miles. Oil changed regularly but not the transmission fluid. Always heard a flush can hurt more than it helps.

I’m pretty positive it’s dripping motor oil but can’t confirm until tonight. I think tranny fluid is more of a red color?

A bad valve body can cause hard upshifting and downshifting issues. First I would test the MAF and have a look at the throttle body to make sure it's not full of trash. If the throttle body is clean and the MAF is functioning then drop the valve body and replace it. They are only a couple hundred dollars

The oil leak could be related but let's hope not. I've heard of EGR's leaking oil on those cars but never seen it. You may get to have twice as much fun if a leaky EGR is letting enough oil into the intake to fill it with garbage.

I read online it could be the egr valve.

I’m pretty sure the two issues are related bc as soon as we saw the oil drops it started shifting hard all the time. Mostly upshifting.

Way past time for a transmission fluid and filter to be changed. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? May not be able to do this yourself. Lot of vehicles today require a trip to the dealer to do this. VW is real particular, too, about the types of fluids you can put in your VW. Some of the stuff we use in most vehicles will destroy the engine in some VW's. LINK

I also am wary of flushes but notice I said drop pan replace filter and fill.

Doing this you aren’t flushing any contaminants around and are still getting a good amount of fluid relaxed. Hell if you to play with integration theoretically you could do it enough times until you have 99.999% new oil

Open the hood and look. If it's leaking bad enough to drip on the ground it will be pretty obvious.

yep, you need to replace the fluid in the tranny. every vehicle is different. some trucks and suvs have auxillary tranny coolers in front of radiator where its easier to access the tranny fluid lines but all the radiators have a tranny cooler as well. thats the hose you will need to disconnect to do the flush.

this shows how its done LINK

ya, thats an old wives tale that hasnt been true since the 80s.

the engines and trannys made today need the fluid flushed and replaced every 100k miles even though most people never do.

even some dealers will claim fluid lasts a lifetime but they are full of shite. my 4runner has this "lifetime" fluid but i just changed it at 180k miles and it was no longer red and was dark brown and smelled burnt. it now shifts smoother and better then it ever has before and doesnt get as hot

Common issue. Change the transmission fluid/filter and add Dr Tranny Instant Shudder Fix. It sounds like snake oil but take a look at what others have to say on the VW forums. I put in a VW years ago and ran it 50-60k miles with no issues until the car was totaled.

Oil leak ended up being a vacuum pump which from reading online is a common problem for that car.

assuming you still have the shifting issue?

Might not be an actual shifting issue and might be the engine stuttering on acceleration due to a vacuum issue from the faulty pump. The pump is def leaking so getting that replaced then will see if it still has the stuttering issue and go from there.
