Anyone on the board with feedback on their campers. I am looking to get a camper this spring to travel with the wife and kids it needs to be a bunkhouse preferably because we have 3 kids with possibly father in law joining. I'm looking between a 5th wheel or a travel trailer I was looking for some feedback on good brands and brands to stay away from.

My last 5th wheel was a Forest River. I would probably avoid them in the future.

I've been having my 24' Apex for about a year. It has bunks. The only thing is the bathroom is alittle too small and it doesn't have a/c ducts, just a/c vents off the main unit. We have to place fans to circulate air to the bunks and master bed area. It was my first camper purchase, lesson learned. I've had zero problems with the camper though, it is well built.

We could have a very long discussion but first what sportTiger said. What truck are you pulling with? Where do you plan to take it? Stopping it is more important than pulling(sure trailer brakes are there but if you are over loaded it will push you).

Its not fun towing at or over your max towing capability on the interstate.

Bought our first RV last year. 27’ Sportsmen LE made by KZ. Quality seems about on par with most. Go to the RV shows on weekends in your area and see what you like.

one of the scariest moments of my life was pulling a fema trailer (32'?) from BR to shreveport in the rain. my parents were on vacation and decided we needed it for the deer camp

chevy 1500 with not so great tires. no sway bar.

butt puckered for 4 hours straight

ETA - first stop light i came to i thought i had left myself plenty of room to stop. not the case at all.

If you have a proper truck to tow a 5th wheel, go with that over bumper pull. I have a Grand Design and love it. I would highly recommend them and their warranty is the best in the business outside of the very expensive brands (DRV & Redwood). Avoid Forest River from what I have seen and heard from fellow campers.

Go to a RV show. Seriously. You will get a good idea of what you like and dont like. They are a great way to narrow your options and you can get good deals at one.

St Louis had a RV show Jan 31-Feb 3. Go with your family and check it out. Look at the different floor plans. Also look at the underneath of the camper. You can find out a lot about the quality of the RV by looking underneath.

I've had 4 campers 2 bumper pull 1 a layton 1 a heartland. Both decent campers. 2 fifth wheels both made by keystone both much better built then the bumper pulls. Pulling a fifthwheel is much more stable and ride better than a bumper pull, only drawback is you lose the storage space of your pickup bed with them.

We recently purchased one and had a similar scenario to yours. We went with Grand Design and are very pleased. Take a look at the Toyhaulers there are two queen beds and half bath in the garage. Very nice for the kids and in-laws. Two things though... shop around; we used a dealers price in Tx to get Dixie RV to where we needed to be; take the stock mattresses out and replace, your back will thank you.

Go toy hauler.

Laoding shite is so.much nicer. Bikes, BBQ pit, ice chest, tables....

Build some stands and you can prop them up and make a back patio if you have the room.

They are the way to go.

My truck is a 2013 GMC sierra 2500hd with the diesel I will for sure go take a look at the RV show, with me and my wife having mountain bikes and kayaks and of course all the kids bikes toy hauler may be the way to go. I've rented a Layton 33ft bumper pull before and I think I'd prefer to go 5th wheel

Seems as though you would have plenty of options then as I would guess you are anywhere from 13-17k towing but check to be sure.

Like they said go 5th wheel if you can. You can go multiple slideouts as the weight wont matter with your truck most likely.

Someone said get a good mattress(+1!!!). There are many floorplans to meet your needs.

Now that the biggest obstacle (towing vehicle) is out the way, start looking. Be willing to drive for a deal. I’ve bought from Berryland and Bents RV. Both were better than expected experiences. Happy camping!!

Get a 5th wheel and a B&W Companion hitch installed. If you go with a toy hauler, you might want to get air bags installed.

For most of the floor plans that we've been looking at we really like the three bunks in the rear and the fold-out couch they seem like theres more room for the kids.

They are ALL cheaply made so keep that in consideration when looking. I have a keystone and have had good luck with it (going on 2 years old and no shop visits)

Some are saying to be willing to travel but also keep in mind warranty, the dealerships are independent and not obligated to work on your unit just because it's kz,keystone, forrest river.

5th wheel toy haulers are nice because it makes up for the bed space you lose and you can literally open it up and throw everything in there as another poster stated. You have a capable truck but keep in mind payload because toy haulers have a HEAVY pin weight

Anything over 26ft your gonna want multiple ACs. Coleman seems to be better than dometic at the moment as a family member has had multiple failures with dometic.

My Dad had a 2003 2500HD with the Duramax and pulled a 5th wheel with it no problem. I've got that truck now and I'm pushing 200K miles on it (knock on wood). He added air bags to help level the truck off when the weight of the trailer was on the truck. Helped the ride immensely. He pulled a 32ft 5th wheel with 3 slide outs. I can't recall the name thought. Mom got rid of it after Dad passed away in 09.
