Have any of you ever heard of this, I think it's illegal but I'll tell a little story.

My dad was friends with a guy who was a Louisiana Senator back in the 70's, he owned a badass duck camp in southern Arkansas. I was a kid when we went so I can't remember exactly where it was, probably late 80's early 90's.

They had mallard hens in a cage and would tie a weight to one leg and put them in the decoys, when ducks flew over the hen would call like crazy, flap it's wings, kick stirring the water up. Worked like a charm.

I was probably 9 or 10 years old but I remember the guy telling me "if the game warden shows up shoot that duck with the string on it's foot".

I'm protected by the statute of limitations on this

It would be illegal and I've not heard of this actually happening in any of my duck adventures and BS stories. And I find it strange that anyone would be so desperate to kill a duck they would even try this. I wonder if the senator was also a member of Ducks Unlimited at the time?

I have heard of it. One group said it worked. The other said it didn’t work because the ducks (decoys) weren’t used to being tied and they were going crazy.

Live callers were used by many market gunners, supposedly it was very effective.

Yeah, how long ago was that? And market hunting now is no more legal than using live decoys. Let me think, the 1920s??

I can assure you he was on the front row of every banquet held and a big money donor.

Well I can't say I've always been the best law abiding waterfowl hunter. But nowadays I hunt and miss everything I shoot at. So you can say now I'm a conservationist.

They called them “English Callers” were supposed to be effective. Have a buddy that used to salvage crippled specks and use them and they were very effective.

It’s still legal in other countries. Some place in Europe or Russia or somewhere over there.

I’ve seen some YouTubes links, but the writing is foreign so I don’t know how to find them. Current ones exist.

My father used one back in the day. He brought a banker friend over from Texas on a hunt. They wade into the hole, the Call duck jumps up and the banker shoots it. True story.

I live on a 10 acre pond and we have what I thought were mallards. A buddy from Stuttgart came over one day from and told me they were call ducks. I did some research and as others have indicated they were bred specifically as decoys.

If you read about caller ducks they were well trained. They would sit among the decoys and call the birds in then when the birds landed the caller duck would swim to the blind and the market hunters would unleash hell.

There is a lot more to caller ducks than just tying a leg to a stick and expecting them to do all the work. In the olden days with training they were highly effective
