Is it possible to buy "good snakes" and introduce them into your yard in order to keep the bad ones away?

We are moving in a couple of weeks and all these threads about king snakes and others eating copperheads has me intrigued.

Never heard of this strategy.

Hoping to attract some wandering cat who wants to live outside and catch snakes. Not going to buy one or bring one inside though.

Doesn't go over well in most neighborhoods We have an acre, not a ranch.

Theoretically i guess it could work. However you would have to buy older animals which are not readily available. There is no way to guarantee they will stay in the area you want them to. You may introduce unknown pathogens into the native populations. Also, I am fairly certain it is illegal to release captive animals (especially non-native species) into the wild without proper permits.

In other words, dont do this.

Ya it didn't actually sound like a good idea, but I just got wondering.

So is there any way to attract good snakes?

Wait, that would mean rats and copperheads, so nevermind that one too.

You could just go catch a king snake in the woods or something and let it go around your house. It won’t cost you as much money

Well, the good news is, if you have the things there for them to eat, the "good" snakes will already be there (assuming you aren't moving to the middle of a city and the issue is rats).

But, yeah, releasing snakes isn't a good idea due the reasons mentioned.

This makes a lot of assumptions.

Cats are the best thing for controlling snakes. Sometimes they'll play with them until they get bored, then kill them.

went to my FILs and say a snake on the poarch with the cat next to it. I was like cool the cat killed a snake, as i walked up the snake was alive and started to slither away. The cat reaches it paw out and slammed the snakes head down and pulled it back to where it was.

It was hilarious.

But then you will have to deal with this...

Back yard is wooded and very steep. And we will not have any grass at all.

We have a cat that adopted us I guess you could say. She’s always around and we even let her in when it was freezing. I’m sure she keeps them away but it’s the other things she brings that’s the problem. She’s brought at least 7 baby rabbits for us dead and tons of lizards in the past couple years. Here lately she’s been bringing what I think is salamanders. They are the size of baby alligators nasty looking things.

My aunt sent me a pic this week of a king snake working over a garter. I don’t know how to post. Someone else can. I’ll send it

I'm sure your neighbors will appreciate you bringing some snakes into the neighborhood. You can control an acre worth of bad snakes with a stick.

When I bought my property this was a wild arse idea I had because of all of the moccasins I was killling during clean up and construction.
I never did it because once the grass was kept up, king snakes and rat snakes naturally moved in while moccasins naturally moved out.
