Buying guns from a friend

Have a friend whose father passed several months ago. He’s going through consignment to sell guns of his fathers that he already had.
I figured I could buy some of them in cash from him, but he seems cautious about selling them without a license. I don’t think it’d be an issue given it’s a cash transaction. What am I missing here?

Probably depends on the state but if you're in the south you just have to give him the cash and he can sell them to you no problems. As long as you aren't a convicted felon. He doesn't need a license.
I should add if he's still concerned just run them through a local ffl. But private sales are totally legal. Given you aren't a felon, you know the gun wasn't illegally obtained, some states require different rules for handguns or going across state lines Etc.

Thanks baw. I’m in Birmingham so that’s what I thought.

Tell him to do some research if he is uncomfortable, but like was said, depending on where you are (assuming you are not a felon) shouldn't be a problem.

The only issue that may arise is if you two live in different states.

If he wants it to look more "official", there are tons of receipt forms online

He could always create a receipt/bill of sale with serial numbers/dates/price/etc to record the transaction. If anything were to arise, he can’t point to that document as proof that is was sold

If there are any left over after you buy, I'll buy the left overs.

This is what I always do. Just have both parties sign it and transfer the cash for guns and it’s a done deal.

If he's truly your friend you should tell him to keep his father's guns unless he really needs the money for something.

I sold to a fellow tiger droppings guy a few years ago. He paid cash, we wrote down the serial numbers and each signed a paper stating we were transferring them just as a CYA and that was that. Very pleasant.

The dealer that has them, is probably trying to convince him that it's a problem, because he wants his commission.

Explain the law and if you have to run it through a ffl
