Last hunt of the season this morning. Put a bad shot on a good 8. Tracked specks for a couple hundred yards. Dark red. I think he’s still alive. Probably a leg shot. First time that’s ever happened to me on 40 years of hunting. Still a good season tho.

Man it happens eventually to everyone.

I flat out missed the two biggest bucks I’ve ever shot at

Oh I’ve flat out missed before too. Can’t remember if I’ve ever failed to recover one though

Yeah, missing sucks, but hitting and losing it is a waste of a good deer on top of it. I feel your pain, OP.

I grazed one high at about 360 a few weeks ago. Thought I had him but only stunned him. Pretty sure I saw him (after the grazing incident) that afternoon and the following morning, too.

Last year I had a big 8 come out and he was walking back in the woods as I went to go shoot, rushed the shot and knew it was a bad one. Before I got out the stand to go check and see, a huge 10 walked out in the exact same spot, smoked him Funny how hunting works sometimes.

I had a rifle built and rushed trying to hunt with it. Wasn’t grouping well and it was pissing me off trying to get it to group. Finally got two good shots and thought I had it dialed in. Deer came out and I missed him at 130 yards. Reloaded a bullet and he came back out but didn’t trust the gun so didn’t shoot. When I finished my hunt the bullet would eject so I sent it back to the gun maker with a live round in the chamber.

They got the gun and grabbed the scope and the entire pic rail and scope came off. The pic rail screws were broke in half

What was the deer's reaction after the shot? Did you find any wound beds? Leg usually has sliver of bone on the track. This sounds more like brisket or high shoulder. If he dropped and laid there for a little bit before getting up or crawling off, it's a high back shot. All of those minus leg have a damn near 100% survival rate pending no infection.

Never laid down. Didn’t come across any bone in the track. Slight buck on impact and trotted off

I didn’t think about brisket but that could absolutely be a possibility

It's brisket. Dark red blood is muscle. Brisket can be either spotty or it looks like a murder scene with wound beds everywhere, but both go on and on and on with no deer.

I know that sucks but if it was just specks, he’s probably gonna be fine.

Thanks. I actually feel a little better about it now. This shite has been bothering the hell out of me. I’ll get him next year!

Seriously call one of the trackers on the Louisiana blood trailing
Network. They will come out and find it if it’s dead.

This is a facebook link...I don't believe there is a charge, but don't know, but always good to tip something for fuel if recovered...

It happens if you hunt long enough. I now have another good tracking dog. That’s my only chance if they run in the thick shite I hunt.

Dark red could be liver also

If it’s liver he’s gonna die
