For the spinning reel I'm leaning toward the Penn Battle5000. It's reasonably priced and has great reviews. Any reason why I shouldn't?

Wayyy too big. What are you fishing with it again? If you're gonna use it for specks and reds I'd get a 2500 sized reel. If only reds and mostly big reds then 3500. I have a Cardinal 104 and it's too big for any of the fishing I do.

I've been thinking about the same, for wacky rigs. My buddy throws wacky on a spinning rig and doesn't have to worry about wind like me and can just pitch it wherever he wants. I can't justify it though when I have a purpose made weightless worm baitcaster rod. I have a Cardinal 300Ui on my ultralight, that is a tiny reel but it's awesome.

Mine somehow ended up having the line eat through the plastic on the little right below the metal part the line is supposed to run on, and now there's a slit there and my line always slides in there instead of where it's supposed to go and screws up my reeling. I need to try to fix it, I haven't even picked it up in a year because of that.

I got a combo at the BPS in Katy for $50 about 8 or 9 years ago. Solid little combo. I used to use it for bream fishing but I have an old beat up 6' light rod I used for specs when I was little and put a $12 zebco 11t on it and it's pretty much all I use now, at least with a cork.

Whatever you do, don't buy a falcon HD ultralight rod. I'm on my second one, the first one snapped the second time I used it, with very little pressure on it. Only reason I still have one is because Academy replaced it fo free

I'm telling you, that 5000 sized penn is too big. Especially on a light rod. That's a good spec/redfish rod but don't put any bigger than a 2500 sized reel on it. I can't see you needing anything bigger than a 3500 for inshore fishing. Anything bigger is bulky and unnecessary weight.

Penn makes good reels, just look for something a little smaller. If you're fishing mostly reds I'd look for that same rod same length but in medium. That one you posted would be better geared towards trout fishing. It'll do find for reds but you won't really be able to turn em with it being a light action rod.

If you plan on fishing out of your yak or pirouge, forgo the bait caster and stay with spinning reels. Height plays a factor in casting a baitcaster.

PFD. Yes, you must have it in the boat with you. Type #2 will cover your arse. I got a ticket once not having one with me. Hell, my pirouge was on the bank, not on the water and a young punk WL&F gave me the ticket. I asked him if he gives people tickets if they are duck hunting out of a pirouge. Of course he didn't answer.

So right now I'm looking at a Falcon Coastal 7' Medium for sure and trying to decide on the reel

I was about to recommend the Coastal, it's a great stick. All-Star's Shrimp Tail Special is also an awesome trout rod

If you are on the Northshore aor in the area, go to Slidell and see Gus at Gus' Tackle. He has everything you need.
