Registered or not people pay all kinds of money for dogs. Maybe you think it’s too much but sometimes the market bares different numbers. See a grand all the time.

For all of that he is wrong not most. I can borrow a couple if he’s willing to wager some $$ and teach.

$1000 is too much for what the guy is offering is all I’m saying. On a national level, $1000 will get you much more of a lab then what they are offering. You can get fully health cert QAAxHRCH breeding with a solid pedigree for that kind of money.
At any rate, I’ve ranted off topic from OP. To him I say get your puppy from this guy In exchange for stud or your stud fee and stick to your guns.

you could be just as big a jerk as him. breed the dog but don't sign the registration papers. he can give you the pup which is the usual price when stud fee is waved. If he said he sells his pups for $1500 would you owe him $800.

I’m not going to sit and argue semantics but I promise you a well bred 750-1500 dog will do you as well as a 2-5k$ dog
I’ve been around competitive hun/field test labs for 10-15 years and have seen dogs go for astounding prices, I even paid nearing 2 grand for my last dog.
If you know what you’re looking for and aren’t getting scalped by a shitty breeder or somebody taking advantage of you, you should be fine.
That said my current dog came out of a litter that was going 14 on females and 12 on males. I got POL for 8 and a few deer hunts, also bought this one from my dog trainer and good friend I’ve know since I got into Labs.
Anybody that asks me for a recommendation on a litter gets the same response:”make sure it has health certs and see how the parents are around a small kid”
If you go off of those two rules of thumb and aren’t looking for a designer color you will almost always be able to find a well bred dog for under $1k

Kinda changed your pricing and tune there bud. Your $800 dog just turned into $1200 if I read you right. Also, you opened up larger price comparison parameters.
You are on the right track, but even $500 makes a difference in the caliber of breeding when talking labs. Also, I’m talking strictly puppy price, not “started or finished” dogs.

I just laugh at people spending 1500-2k$+ on a lab.

If that is a puppy price, then agree 100%. You can get a started dog for that.

Started is such a subjective term with dogs. Maybe you can but you better know what you’re looking for because everyone’s definition is different.
I consider it to be force fetched, cc, basic OB, 3 handed casting, working on steady in field & simple singles. $1,500 used to get what I described but that # has doubled easily now.

Very true.

Yea, good trainers that know what they are doing are gonna run $550+ and month. So a started dog is gonna get up in price fast, unless he ain’t worth keeping.

Considering that buying a started dog is kinda like buying a used car, you can be as subjective as you want since you have the check book and you can test drive it (or in this case, watch the dog work) before writing that check.

I would not consider a started dog being able to cast much. Like you said, basic OB, simple single marks, intro to gunfire, and birds. Since I run HRC, it is as simple for me as a dog that can pass a Started Test with bonus points on one that has moved on to Seasoned. For me, that caliber of dog is in the $1,500-$2,000 price tag depending on pedigree and the more polished the dog, the higher the price tag.

I sold a NFCxFC-AFC ($1,500 puppy) that was handling out to 250-300 with multiple marks for $3,500 7 years ago because she was so nasty i couldn't deal with her. Lost 50% on the deal but she had to go and the guy got a smashing deal. Bought several broken dogs and flipped them after i turned them around and some the pros just had no clue how to train.
A good dog is one that makes YOU HAPPY not anyone else. Good luck OP with your breeding.

if we do then would you guys be okay with paying the difference for the pick of the litter since we would be taking a slight loss on pick of the litte

Your answer: “Well, I agree that the financial part can be uncomfortable. However, my stud fee is $700 cash or the pick of the litter. Because, you know, I’m not involved in setting the price for the pups. That’s between your wife and yourself. That being said, $700 cash or POL.”

I’ve had a few studs over the years. It’s a flat fee or a pup. Usually, guys are handing me cash, so I don’t take a pup.

He will ask $1k for his pups but may not get that in the end. Also, that’s none of your business.

just tel him, "welp i talked to my wife and she rasied the fee to 1k. so it is 1k or POL. Does that make you feel better?"

There are diamonds in the rough with retrievers. That's why I would never pay some overpriced sum of money for a started/semi-finished dog using the formula (price of puppy plus add however months at trainer X $500-$600 equals price of dog). Screw that shite. I run across deals on dogs all the time, mostly on 2Cool but some through word of mouth at hunt tests or sometimes with some of the guides I know. The best deals are the ones involving divorces. Second best is the baw that is strapped for cash but can't part ways with the jacked-up F250 or the MM rig but the dog is on the auction block.

True Stories;

Guy buys dog, brings it home and a few days his wife finds out what he paid. Guy brings dog back past free look for a refund less 20%.

Guy has some training done, wife finds out what he paid. Guy comes home to find a house full of new furniture.

Happened to me; Guy wants to sell his "trained" dog. I pick up dog to evaluate and find that previous trainer had done a poor job with the collar. Call owner and tell him he needs to pick up his dog, guy says i can keep it. Now i have a dog i can't sell or fix but it's mine cause he won't come get it. Ended up giving it to a buddy and they get along swell and the dog actually picks up his ducks.

You're at a disadvantage because you have a male with no titles. Nobody wants to breed their female to a (perceived) no/low talent male with no titles and take the hassle/risk of raising and selling up to 10-12 puppies.

I wouldn't pay the guy $300, but you likely won't have another chance to have him bred (to a stranger's dog). Your other option is freeze his goo, buy a female, train her, then breed, but that costs much more than $300. Pup selling prices often match the stud fee FWIW
