Thinking about changing my hunting round for my .308
I have been shooting Remington Core-Lokt for years now and just want a change. Most shots are under 150 yards with an occasional shot at about 200.

Suggestions?

Any out there load a Berger 168gr Hunting VLD? My .30 cal. rifles love 168gr bullets but yours may not of course.

Federal Fusion is what I shoot. It’s been devastating

I'll second the fusions. Had 2 deer fall victim to the 165gr this past week and was nothing short of impressed.

For shooting deer I assume?

Federal blue box is my favorite. They usually shoot and perform well. It’s just a regular ol cup and core bullet that will do fine at normal .308 velocity.

My old man shoots hornady interlocks 165gr in his .308 and has killed a pile of deer with them with good results. I don’t think he’s had one fail to exit yet.

I shoot federal premium Nosler partitions in my .30-06 and they are fantastic, but only becuase it doesn’t shoot blue box particularly well. Most of the “premium” stuff out there will perform great but for a .308 on deer I would only go that route if my rifle didn’t like normal stuff.

It’s easier to compile a list of what I don’t recommend for a .308:

Any “match” bullet-they won’t exit reliably (Begera VLD, Sierra MatchKing)
Core lock - they will over-expand at high velocity
Elk Loads-they won’t expand reliably (heavy Barnes TTX, Winchester Failsafe)

-the exception to the elk load think is the Nosler Partition, which has a pretty soft front half and will still open up on deer.

Barnes vortex 150gr ttsx. I’ve been using them for a few years now and best penetration I’ve seen out of all the .308 rounds I’ve shot. I’m sticking with them from here out.

I love my core locks. I don’t think I would change.

Remington Core-Lokt 150gr, used them in my 308 for 35 years, never a problem, most deer are DRT

Sage advice. One of my hunting buddies has killed >100 deer w/ his 308 Win. His factory loads are currently the 150 gr Hornady SST Superformance. They shoot so well he may stop handloading (150 gr Sierra Boat Tail Spire point x 25 years).

In my son's 308 I load 150 gr Sierra Flat Base Spire Point bullets, but I just worked up a load for the 150 gr Nosler AccuBond. W/in it's velocity range, the 308 Win works well w/ a lot of bullets. Find something that's reliably available and shoots well in your gun. I like NAB's in a lot of calibers. Accuracy of the Ballistic Tip w/ the penetration of the Partition.

No all ar10s are heavy except for the ones costing 2500-3000 that are redesigned to be lighter

Depends on what you’re wanting to use it for.

AR-10s are expensive. I have on in 6.5cm. I built it myself. It is stupid accurate. It has a heavy 22” barrel. With the suppressor, it’s 15lbs.

I would have no problems around here deer hunting with it. It is not something to try and take out west where there is expected to be a lot of walking. Around here there just isn’t that much walking.
