The Prime series will get a look from me before I just rush out and buy a new Mathews.

If I had been on a larger budget I would have looke very closely at them. Apparently they had been moving a good bit of them.

Talk to chaz at Bowie's. He's the guy. Treats me right and never charges me for small stuff and does most of it right then. Hooked me up yesterday on arrows and spent some time getting my bow tuned right after he fixed it. They sell all kinds of bows and will let you shoot anything you want. Go see them. Great people. Fyi they have a tax free 2nd amendment weekend on sept 7-9.

Its comparable to the Mathew helim (think only difference is weight) but slightly different than the Z7 magnum: AtoA 32, BH 7 if I remember correctly

Have you seen the Obsession Sniper XS? It's designed by the guy from Strothers and I've heard great reviews. If it came in a 30" draw length I'd go shoot one, unfortunately it tops out at 29.5"

Speed: 335+ FPS
Axle to Axle Length: 31
Brace Height: 7”
Draw Length: 22 1/2” to 29 1/2
Weight: 3.7 lbs

Bowies has Hoyt and Matthews. Spillway really pushes Bowtech.

I always thought that the guys at Bowies were assholes and disrespectful.

Since you have never shot a bow I would suggest shooting as many different ones as possible. Definitely look at Bass Pro and Cabelas as they have many different brands as well as accessory packages and will let you shoot. They will fit you as far as draw length and draw weight and give you form pointers. Being fit properly is much more important than the brand. It takes some time to find what you like so don't be in a rush. If you are set on trying Hoyt and Mathews, see Jamie in Hammond at Archery and Fishing Unlimited. He has both those brands as well as Bowtech and PSE. Good Luck!

Kevin Strother was the designer that made Bowtech relevant (designed the BT Allegiance) left (was fired?) from there and went to Elite where he designed the GT500. He left there and was a cofounder of Strother Archery. There was a falling out there and he now designs for Obsession Archery. Apparently he is tough to work with, but the guy designs great bows.

Yeah, I knew the story until that last part. I know Kevin. I won't say anything more there.

If he left his own company, who now has Strother?

According to AT Brian Park is the president of Strother. Kevin left in 2010 and he and his wife started K&K Archery. They filed bankruptcy, but K&K has a 2012 line of bows.

LINK

Somehow he also hooked up with Obsession and designed their 2012 line up.

I was in Bowie looking at Hoyt and Matthews just a few weeks ago. I think they even have PSE and Bowtech. I would try to find a Hoyt, Matthews or PSE in your range. I shoot a Hoyt Vector Turbo right now and have shot Matthews in the past.

Man, that dude just can't stay anywhere. That's one reason I've never bought a bow from any company he has touched.

Want to shoot a bunch - the Quest Rogue G5, Bear Encounter, and the PSE Brute have me intrigued but will try several and report back.. I want to get something I really feel comfortable with. I am a big x football player but will start out at draw weight of about 55 to start since I am a virgin to bows.

I will take a drive to Hammond and also visit Bowie Outfitters although the following statement has me a bit concerned as I hate assholes who would get impatient with a beginner.

Met a really cool hunter at BP who totally loved it that I didn't know crap about bows. Said his dad was a lifelong hunter and just started learning about bows a few years back and now prefers it over rifle.
