I donated a copy of "Water Dog" to the Purple Cow on Jones Creek Road. Go see if it's still there.

Rick Stawski fowl dawgs DVD collection is probably the most user friendly retriever training set out there and it uses modern principles and methods. Very Cheap for the full dvd package as well.
Water dog is archaic on almost every note.

Talked to Milner a couple of times as well. He's isn't far from me.
He's awesome. I have one of his dogs. He was able to revolutionize the FEMA search dog training after 9-11. He utilizes the same method that the Navy uses to train dolphins. They were able to put more dogs through training with fewer trainers in a shorter amount of time.

^^ I came here to post this. I got my lab as a present for finishing law school in 2012. I had wanted a Wildrose dog, but the waitlist was long and one wouldn't be available in time for graduation - then I learned about Milner's place. He had started another facility in Tennessee after selling Wildrose called Duckhill Kennels.

Whatever you decide on.. remember these 2 things
-patience
-take alot of time daily to train/work
Sounds simple, but i cant stress it enough

I'm good friends with his son. I also like the breed of lab that they have. They use a British Labrador which is slightly smaller than American labs. They tend to be more docile, obedient, and can fit in tighter spaces. Great dogs and great trainers.

Sounds like Water Dog had been the consensus. Thanks guys, I’ll pick me one up (unless BRgetthenet was serious about giving me a copy).

Water Dog is very outdated and nothing, no amount of hype and marketing, can compete with a well bred and proven American Labrador Retriever.
Lardy, Farmer, Rorem, and many others provide much better material. Even Hillman and knowning him somewhat that is a hard thing to say.
Just do a little research and you should be able to find something that will suit your needs.
Good luck,
fp

Sure bud. I’ve bid farewell to my last black lab a few years ago. The yellow I have from Thibodaux is from a great line. But, I didn’t even bother teaching him to heel. There’s no ducks in this f’n state.
I’ll find it today. I can get your address by email and drop it off at the post office Saturday morning. It’s a little blue hard cover with gold lettering on the spine, if I remember correctly.
The previous comment is probably true. It’s most likely been surpassed by better trainers. But, it’s a classic. It’s like Hogans Five Lessons, for labs.
I’ll send you Hogan‘s Five Lessons too, if you’d like. There’s no golf courses in this f’n state.

I've heard a lot about Water Dog and have a copy somewhere.
But there are a few basics that you don't need a book for.
1. Dogs are always learning. You have to condition and reinforce the lesson always. Always be working on sit, come, heal, and praise a lot. Until they are 5+ years old.
2. Treats for praise randomly. Not always.
3. There is always an Alpha in the pack. Your house is the pack. If you aren't the Alpha, the dog is. Every time he/she tries a stunt/ignores you, they are probing your limits. "How far away can I get before the human thinks I can't hear him?"
4. Either you are training the dog or it is training you, at every interaction. If it barks a lot and you let it out, the dog has trained you to let it out. If you ask it to sit three times and it refuses, the dog has trained you to give up after three tries. Make it sit after request 2.
Dogs are great and also a wonderful way for teaching kiddos responsibility. Have a great time and good luck!
