I trapped as a kid in and around what is now Tensas NWR. I caught one one time in a raccoon set. They are beautiful animals.

Played golf today at Carter Plantation, saw multiple very very dark squirrels.

As for the guy that said he saw a black cat squirrel. Pretty sure black squirrels can only be fox squirrels like how jaguars can be black.
This isn’t true. Eastern gray squirrels can be black, and they have the genes for that coloration (and it is dominant, believe it or not). A Google search will reveal it.
And my uncle has a mounted black gray (cat) squirrel on his wall, species confirmed by biologist (and teeth count).

no BS?
I don’t joke about serious issues like the number of teeth in a squirrel’s mouth.

I corrected that later. It said rarely and mostly in the Northern portion of their range around the Great Lakes Basin. I guess it would have to be extremely rare for it to be South of the Mason Dixon Line. I know I have never “knowingly” seen one, but I have never counted their teeth. Thanks for the knowledge.

What I saw was most definitely a black cat squirrel. I have killed over 1000 squirrels in my life and I know the difference between a cat and a fox squirrel. I saw it at a distance of 5 ft as I stated that is why I said I was 100% sure. Fwiw it was in Avoyelles Parish in the Lake Ophelia area.

I remember going to Mississippi for a deer hunt and seeing so many black squirrels. It's not a big deal for them at all.
Also, I was at LSU for the albino squirrel that lived by the clock tower. It was good luck to see him.

Oddly enough, the only black (Fox in this case) squirrel I've ever seen was next to a white squirrel. Where I live in the Florida panhandle white (not albino) gray squirrels are not all that unusual. Near me they can be pretty common. Black squirrels are rare here, though.

Saw one when I was on a school trip to Washigton D.C. when I was in 4th grade. It was sitting near the base of a tree probably 15 feet from me in Arlington National Cemetary. I had no clue they were a thing. Haven't seen another one to this day.
