I'm pretty sure you just go up there just to drive the tractor now
It would be nice if yall could burn. Gotta file a burn plan with the firemen in MS though. LA is an outlaw state, and we do what we want.
In that area of town, you could roll with some loblolly pines and a few oak trees. Soil type and nutrients are the limiting factor in tree growth. Those two would do the best IMHO. Plus, you don't want something that looks way out of place
In reality, you could go with:
baldcypress
cherrybark oak
water oak
willow oak
loblolly
sweetgum
FWIW, soil is called Guyton silt loam. Call NRCS:
Jefferson, New Orleans
1041 Rue La Cannes, Luling, LA 70070
985-331-9084
They have these old books that aren't made anymore, and it says what trees will grow best on that soil, and fastest on that soil.

We planted a royal empress and a few red leaf maples. They probably dont get as big as you are wanting but make good "yard trees" as I call them.

I'd stay away from Bradford Pears. Those are some weak-arse trees. Bird-fart of a wind will split their weak structure.

I hate Bradford Pear trees!
Drake Elms are very fast growers.

No way I'd plant something based of a tree not from 'Murica

Live oaks grow much faster than you think. Plant one.
Problem to watch for--hard to get enough light and water under a live oat for grass to grow.

the Paulownia/Royal Empress trees are the fastest growing trees in the world. After the first couple of years they'll be at least 25 feet. they put off a fragrant bloom in the late winter (purple flowers). excellent shade with the big leaves.
the downfall is that they drop seeds, so you may have a couple pop up here and there. but not that bad.
they like the full sun too, grow slower in shaded areas.

No shite. Can't stand them.

They work as trees though and are tough as nails. Can't deny that

Sycamores grow quickly. The leaves can be a pain though.
Posted on 12/11/13 at 7:11 pm to Hammertime
Yeah but they will take over if you aren't careful.

Yeah. We have several big ones on our place and they everywhere we don't bushhog or can't burn. I hate em, they stank

Both eventually turn into giant wind socks/sails and get demolished during hurricane season.

You can buy some decent sized oaks.
Too big and they're stressed and smaller ones will catch them up after they get going on a few years.

That goes double for water oak. There was a thread about this earlier today.
