Do any of these work as advertised and are worth it? I don’t have any equipment to disc and cover so I was looking for something that I can just throw out. Also, what blocks do y’all recommend for winter time?

Rye grass could grow on the surface of the sun. So can browntop millet.

Those will give you the best germination

I don’t know much about the pre mixed throw brands though

If you time it right, you can get a good stand of wheat. I've done it for years, you just need to catch one of those 3-4 day rainy events that come a bit later in the fall. Plant just on the leading edge of it.

They do work as far as sprouting and growing.
Problem is most of the time if you’re doing it it’s a very small spot or low sunlight or both and with any amount of deer they can’t keep up and get mowed down.

I’m trying some of the Domain “No BS” throw and grow this year. Have heard good things about it

I'm going to roll with the BioLogic mix at Tractor Supply.

I’ve never looked but I’ve heard that these mixes have ryegrass. I would strongly advise against that. Strongly. Just buy wheat or cereal rye (NOT ryegrass) at a feed store. I can see no reason to pay a premium for one of these shiny bags with a mixture of normal seed you can buy at half the price from a co-op. There’s nothing special about these “throw and go” mixes… it’s just seed.

Eta: the Domain mix mentioned above has no ryegrass; the Biologic does. Avoid the Biologic.

Tractor Supply also carries the Domain brand stuff. I'll probably do one plot with each and see how it turns out.

Plant Marshall Ryegrass. It has 25% protein. Get a couple 50 lb sacks.

Don't plant Gulf or any other variety.

Lease? If that’s all you or anyone else ever wants to grow there, go for it.

mow the plot as low as you can before planting. Rig up a drag and run over the seed many times, the seed has to be pressed down to touch the ground. Going to need some strong rain. Some people throw, then mow, but getting it out before a gully washer is most important.

Gully washer isn’t the best if there’s any slope for runoff…..if you have seed on topsoil.
