Need some advice OB. Last night I was trailing a bow-shot boar thru the swamp . As I was on all my hands and knees crawling under palmettos, I realized that if he was still alive and charged me while I was on the ground I was in A LOT of trouble as i had nothing with me except a flashlight. Luckily, he was dead, but I decided it was definitely time for a sidearm for these types of situations.

What caliber/make/model do y'all recommend for carrying while bow hunting? I have never owned a pistol and have essentially no knowledge of 'em.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to y'all responses.

I will try to post a picture of the hog below, but I notoriously struggle with imgur.

If you're worried about charging animals, a .45 is a safe choice. That being said, there are plenty of models that come in that caliber. Go shoot a wide variety and see what feels best.

Some animals have thick or tough hides and skulls, the fmj will penetrate better and give a better chance of damaging something that will incapacitate the animal. Hollow points will mushroom and possibly not get through the hide.

You must not have a very good understanding of how bullets work.

Yes you are right in that rms will penetrate deeper than hollow points. But that does not mean that hollow points won't make it through the hide or skull of a bore.

Hollow points rely on hydraulic pressure to expand. They will not expand until they are into a semi hydraulic medium. So no a hollow point does not just hit the thick skin of a pig and dump all of its energy open up and penetrate a few inches.

Especially in something as hot as 10mm and especially loaded as hot as something like buffalo bore.

If shot at under rated bullet proof vests a fmj will penetrate the same as a hollow point since the hollow point would not expand until through the solid barrier

In Louisiana, you could only carry a .22 caliber or smaller during bow only season but it may have changed in the last couple of years.

Unless you have a concealed carry license and you are carrying your concealed handgun.
