Without a price constraint, I'll say the best is the Benelli M4.

I want one bad.

With price limit the 870 is as good as any

100% agree. The time a gun malfunctions the most more than any other time is when a person is manipulating the action.

The same thing applies to anyone who carries their handgun in condition 2 with an empty chamber. If you really think you'll be able to draw and rack a round with success under stress you're kidding yourself.

I'm of this train if thought too. Racking is awesome in the movies when there's a standoff on the lawn with a bunch of pipe-wielding bad guys.

I do not want my wife/daughter/son having to rack with someone coming in the bedroom or up the stairs.

This.

The "deterrent" of racking a shotgun is a foundation of Hollywood movies. And I'm sure it is sometimes effective.

But I don't want to assume that some thug who is high on meth or crack cocaine will (a) hear, (b) recognize what he heard and (c) be intimidated by the sound of a pump shotgun being racked.

Until I get my (back-ordered) Mossberg 930 JM, I'll have to make do with my Beretta 1201.

If life is in danger I hope the first sound that is heard is muzzle report.

Do you remember what magazine extension you used? I am looking into one, but not sure with so many options out there

Twice I have used firearms to protect life/property. Neither time involved a shot being fired, however the safety was off and my commands were obeyed.

Once it was an airline delivery person, returning lost luggage at 2:30 am- on my porch - it looked very much like he was carrying a weapon. I appeared from his flanked and he shat his pants and put his hands up.....

Another time it was a drunk friend trying to wake me up 4 hours early to go hunting-he had no idea where I came from or that he was ever in danger....,

Of course I have a little bit of training. And can handle. Weapon. For the average Joe....the less things they have to do when being startled awake - the better off they are.....

Buck fever has nothing on intruder fever...,nothing at all..

I bought this one which is the factory.
LINK
It ended up about 3/8 longer than my barrel end.
It comes with the clamp which has a sling lug on it.
If you have a newer 870, they have a dimple in the mag tube end which must be removed.

Check out this blog for a bunch of good 870 related info. LINK /
