I like em all mentioned previously but for my Sasquatch hands for some reason the Ruger Max 9 is best for me with a Holosun 507k & Crossbreed Reckoning holster. Super comfortable & I'm best with it over all the others for down & dirty contact.

Blacykaty,
How are you going to carry? What caliber do you intend to carry?
Personally, I'd rec a small, single stack 9mm for most people. Just my personal preference, but I think most are best served by a DAO gun or a striker fired gun. Some of the better known 9mm single stack mag guns in this category are Kahr CW9/PM9/P9, Ruger LC9/LC9s, Walther PPS M2, S&W M&P Shield, Springfield Armory XDs, Glock 43, Sig Sauer 250 and Beretta Nano. The various versions of the Sig 365 and the SA Hellcat offer increased capacity despite a thin profile For those willing to adequately learn the SAO platform, I'd throw in the Sig 938/ Kimber Micro9/SA 911 9mm. as well as a reliable 1911 (either Officer or Commander size). Most of these guns will be carried inside (or outside) the waistband. Remember that for IWB cc, you'll need to wear pants that are 1-2" longer in the waist.
If one intends to cc outside the waistband (OWB), I'd look at the double stack mag guns. In this category include the various compact and mid-size Glocks, M&P's, XD's and DAO Sig Sauers. Some like to cc a double stack gun IWB. I tried it for a while w/ my first cc gun (SA XD 40 S&W) before quickly realizing it was NOT for me. I'm sure I've left off some good ones, but these are the first that come to my mind.
The main thing is to find a reliable gun that handles well for you. Glocks are VERY good guns, but they don't handle/point well for me. You'll also need to decide what type of features you want your gun to have. If you want an external safety lever, then it won't be a Glock. If you want a grip safety, your gun will have to be an 1911 or an XD/XDs. If possible, handle as many as you can before deciding on one.
If you're going to pocket carry, you'll want a small 380 like my Kahr CW380 or the Ruger LCP. The Kahr CM9 will conceal good in most, but not all, pockets.

The only correct answer is the one you are comfortable with and train with regularly.
for the most part size, brand caliber, color etc are superfluous.
Whatever you have, know your gun, know yourself and train to make the two, one.

Can't go wrong with the S&W Shield.

That's not as applicable as it used to be. I have one of the original M&P Compacts and the Shield Plus made it obsolete as a compact. It now wears a light and a 17 round magazine and lives by my bed.

Spend a little extra and get a Shadow Systems CR920. You won’t regret it.

Not a very popular gun but has great reviews.
Check out the IWI Jericho compact for that price range

Shield EZ 9mm. I could not tell you how many times she had to adjust her grip because she wasn't disengaging the grip safety on the gun.

I sold mine because of that. I had the same problem.
Wise decision.
It wasn't that long ago that people would flock to this board to argue that "all you have to do is grip the pistol." For a self-defense handgun, the grip safety is one of those solutions in search of a problem.

It's a Norco x-carry slide (which is about the size of the compact slide) on a Wilson Combat full size frame with a Parker Mountain threaded barrel and comp. I bought a P320 fire control unit and built everything around it.

Xcarry slide and Sig's compact slide are the same 3.9", while Sig discontinued their subcompact P320, 10rd frame,... the Xcompact is a subcompact 3.6" on a compact, 15rd, frame.

For some reason, there's a very slight difference in the breech face dimension. I had to verify with calipers before I ordered the barrel.
