S&W 686+
End of discussion. The debate is over. The science is settled.

Go check out the Ruger GP100 and the S&W 686. Decide which one you like better. The Ruger will cost a little less dough. After making your mind up on which brand then you can consider the barrel length.
Disclaimer - I own a scoped S&W 686 with a six inch barrel.

For the sake of conversation, I believe the ballistic effectiveness of the .357mag caliber is maximized out of a 4" barrel when shooting 125gr bullets. If I remember correctly, the majority of highway patrol officers used this set up through the 80s until semi-autos became more popular and offered more options for higher capacity at a lighter weight.

Makes sense. I chose the longer barrel because I plan to do some hunting with it.

That's not quite correct. It isn't maxed out with a 4" barrel, that's just where it starts to really act like a .357 magnum should. You have to get very long to max the round out.

Go with a 686,
There are 7-shot versions of this (mentioned by others as the 686+). Mrs. Midnight has an old border patrol model, 6-shot version, that is on loan to her father. It has a 3" barrel and is a sweet, sweet shooting revolver.
I like a 7-shot 686, with a 3" or 4" barrel - or, even better, a PC 327 or 627 with 8 shots in the cylinder. The S&W PC makes exceptionally smooth revolvers.

Curious--How long of a barrel does it take to max out the 357? I know they make 357 rifles but I was referring to revolvers only.

If I had to guess (and this is mostly an uneducated guess) probably 15" with a revolver and 125gr full power loads.

I didn't even know 15" 357 revolvers existed lol the longest I've seen is 8". I'd like to see someone try fitting a 15" 357 into a night stand haha

After doing some research....I like the Python the most...obviously, but I dont want to drop more than 700.
I have found the Pietta is a nice looking gun that could function in the field on my property as a snake/gator/boar deterrent.
I have also found that the Judge has been far surpassed by the S&W Governor
but I like the look of the Ruger GP100
Pros and Cons (without shooting)
Pietta:
PRO: small and lightweight and easy to use. Longer barrel for some distance. Dependability.
CON: modeled after the wild western days and will make me look like an old timer if I ever take it in public
Governor:
PRO: uses three types of ammo including 410 shotgun slugs. POWER,
CON: Jack of all trades, master of none...could never hunt with it.
Ruger?

Excellent choice - the GP100 is one of the best all around protection handguns, in terms of value, performance, history, etc.
I don't think Rugers are quite as smooth as S&W, but they're more durable. Can't go wrong with a GP100 or L-frame for purposes of this thread.

I don't think they do. The longest I've seen was 10.5"
I know 100% without a doubt you get more velocity out of a 6" barrel than a 4" with any factory load.
The reason the 4" is such a prominent barrel length is because that's the minimum length where you really start to take advantage of the .357
Shorter than 4" and you get much worse muzzle blast and much lower velocities.

I personally use a S&W model 10 police trade in from Bud's gun shop. $279 shipped and I think I paid a $20 transfer fee. So for $300 I got a iconic reliable .38 special revolver and plenty of left over money for my conceal carry.
New CT laser grips and this thing is accurate and reliable.

Shotgun and a revolver.
Check out that woman getting her arse kicked in her own home. A small revolver hidden for quick access would have worked out well compared to a longer shotgun.
Got time, then grab the 18" 870

Nope. As Downshift mentioned, longer barrel=higher velocity. I don't know exactly what barrel length yields the maximum velocity, but it's a LOT more than 4". On many occasions, gun writers have started w/ a long barrel (22-24") and measured the velocity as they lopped the barrel off 1-2" at a time. I don't have the link handy, but it can be googled.
quote:The 4" barreled revolver was popular w/ LEO not b/c of maiximum ballistic effectiveness, but because the 4" barrel had a good combination of ease of handling and sufficient velocity to be effective. Longer barrels yielded more velocity, but at the expense of a more cumbersome gun to handle.
