Long story short our firstborn is 2 now and is starting to run around, get into things etc. as a 2 year old is wont to do. I bought a stand up safe and it came in today. We’ve got another one on the way due at the end of this month so I can’t put the safe in his room. We don’t have room in our 4th bedroom’s closet with all the children’s stuff in there. And don’t have room in my wife and I’s closets for it. So unfortunately, it’s been relegated to the garage.

I’m not putting my guns in there until I get a dehumidifier but I can’t seem to find one that doesn’t have quite a few negative reviews on their longevity and how well they work after a few recharges or whatever else they require to get rid of the water collected. I am sort of inclined to take online reviews off Amazon and other sites with a grain of salt as it’s hard to decipher who’s a bot and who isn’t.

Anybody got any suggestions? Are the cordless rechargeable ones worth a damn?

How do they drain the water they collect from inside the safe?

Some call for placing them in the oven at like 220 for 3-4 hours. Some call for microwaving them for a few minutes. Some call for plugging them in and recharging it which releases the humidity collected.

Those seem to have the most negative reviews on how well they hold up after a few times releasing the water.

The little silica packs from shipping containers and the like? Those will work fine for a 30 gun safe?

I’ve got some Eva dry rechargeables and they’re ok… my golden rod’s work great though… but I don’t know how well they’ll do in a garage. I guess it’s better than nothing but I’d make sure all your guns get a good wipe down with a good corrosion inhibitor.

How did you get the cord through the safe? Or does the safe have an outlet built in? If that’s the case then those may not work with mine.

The cords are set up to be fished through a hole if you have one in your safe. You still need a decent enough sized hole though.

Guns will be fine in the garage esp if you oil them before storing

Mine live in a safe in my garage. Wipe down with an oiled rag before storing. Never an issue.

We have owned several dehumidifiers and rented others. Nothing removes water as well as the hOmeLAbs brand. Ever home in Louisiana should have one.

The 4,500 is the best value, prices on amazon changes daily but you can get it for $199.

I use a Goldenrod inside the safe and also put one of the cheap DampRid tubs from Walmart inside.

Get the biggest Goldenrod you can fit. I was surprised at the amount of moisture that the DampRid collects in mine, but we have more humidity in the house than I like. I need one of the units AtlantaLSUfan mentioned.

You just need a big tin of silica or 2. It is the same stuff that comes in packages on a larger scale. It's just little beads that absorb moisture. You recharge them (release moisture) by putting in oven for a couple hours. You can generally tell it's needed when they change color. There's really no good or bad ones, they just do what they do. You can get big ol tins at academy or on amazon for $15-20 iirc. The amount in the container is the only difference - more silica = more moisture they can hold.

Yeah, my wife saves every one that comes in a shoe box, etc.

I was looking for something in my safe the other day and noticed the entire floor is now covered in them a decade plus later. I've never had any issues.

I put a bunch of those silica packets that soak up moisture.

Usually, a hole on the back side towards the bottom, there may be a rubber plug in it.
