My blackhawk has been eating full power magnums and bouncing around in a holster since 1982 and it still locks up straight and tight like its brand new. I love that damn gun.

One of my buddies grabbed my blackhawk once and started spinning the cylinder at about 8000 rpms. I threatened to use it on his left foot

A reloader should stick with ruger. You don't want to try and spit as much fire as possible out the smith too often. A GP100 or blackhawk won't care.

I'm drifting off topic here a little, but I am still impressed that Ruger is finally offering the .44 Spl in the midsize flattop Blackhawk. People were clamoring for that gun for DECADES and they finally listened after the old man died.

I know. It'll probably go the way of the dodo though. .44spl ain't all that popular anymore.

.44 Spl requires a reloader's touch. Factory ammo is weak and hard to find. It has always been somewhat of a connoisseur's caliber.

ETA: It is the perfect caliber for the mid-frame Ruger single action, though he is probably right in that it will eventually be discontinued.

While I do hear what you're saying, reloading for pistols is a lot more appropriate loading DOWN your loads. Plenty of full strength loads out there, not so much for loading down for target practice and manageable recoil. Of course there's alway the 38 for your 357.

frick it. Go buy a press. Any excuse is a good excuse to start hand loading!

My first recommendation for anyone who is looking to initially arm themselves is a Ruger LCR or SP101, despite the fact I have never owned a Ruger handgun. The overwhelming positive press, plus my own experiences with their revolvers lead me to do so.

At the .44 magnum level, I still prefer the Smith 629, and at full size .357, I would probably go with a performance center 627 (Garrison commander and I can share moon clips, that way). However, I also generally prefer factory ammunition (I do own a Glock 23, after all - best practices are best practices).

IF I were to be shooting exclusively handloads/reloads, there is little question I would have Ruger revolvers and Sig pistols...exclusively.

I have a S&W 686 in stainless w/ 4" barrel I have been thinking about selling so that I can buy a 1911. I bought the S&W new 2 years ago from Hebert. Put about 100 rounds through it.

Also I want a heavy frame, like a S&W L or N frame and not the K frame. The heavier frame absorbs more of the energy when shot so there's less muzzle rise and less felt recoil. Also the lighter framed .357s can suffer from frame failure after shooting a lot of .357.

Well from all the information expended from revolver shooters here, it seems like a Ruger GP100 will fit your bill with the extra heft. Downshift claims it will take repeated beatings from full house 357s better than others. I trust his opinion since he's a pretty pureblood wheelgun dude.
