I’m looking for a new or fairly new bay boat.

I’d like to stay under 21’.

I will occasionally bring it offshore but it’s not anticipated that I’d go beyond sight of shore. It will be used inshore 90% of the time.

I want seating for at least 4 including rear jump seats, rod storage, auto bilge, local dealership within 80 miles of Slidell. I’m ready to spend some money after cheaping out for years. It will replace a 2009 Kenner 18’. I’ve gotten so used to it that I don’t know what I’m missing and I’ve heard that there’s a lot of improvements in design, storage, amenities.
It’s time to upgrade.

Models that I’ve liked into are Blackjack, pathfinder, Boston whaler. I’d spend up to 70,000 for boat, motor and trailer.

Any thoughts on what I should be looking at?
Any thoughts on what to avoid?

I have a 24' Blue Wave great riding boat. For $70,000, you could get a lot more boat if you did not go new. Only thing I would recommend is get as big as you can, no one said I wish my boat was smaller.

Lol

True. I’m limited both in storage and water depth so 21’ is about as big as I can get. Going from 18 to 21 will be huge for me.

I'd seriously consider looking into the 22 pathfinder. You could do anything and more you might eventually want to in it

You should buy the used kenner 23v that's for sale in BR right now. Its loaded out to the max and its damn hard to buy a better coastal use hull than that.

If youre bent on staying 21' or under, I would be looking at the frontier 21' model. Great inshore/near shore hulls

I have a 227 Sportsman boat
Absolutely love it, Tons of storage, rides great and can go crazy shallow for a 22 foot boat need to check those out.
Went to New Orleans Boat show in 2015 and found a 2014 year model on a good deal
Best boat i ever owned, but had junk before that purchase

Lot of good options out there and if you're willing to spend 70K you should get plenty of boat with that budget.

I'd recommend the used market to maximize your buying power but keep in mind inventory is crazy low on boats in general right now. New inventory is very hard to get, and so used rigs are selling at a premium.

Nautic Stars have been good to me, for the price point, and also enjoyed our Sportsman 227. Lot of other good options out there so don't marry yourself to one brand.

I know you said under 21 but smallest Blackjack is 22. Pathfinder makes a nice 20ft model.

I've seen some (used) Blackjacks for really good prices lately

I have only had the opportunity to take my 23fs out twice so I don't have that much experience with it yet, but it is a TON of boat for the money.

I’ll say the frontier will be tough to beat at or under 21’. You could get a 225 and deck that thing out for way under your price range. If you’re considering taking it offshore or to the islands you need to look at how the boat drains and how much fuel capacity it has. Most of the smaller “self bailing” boats will keep water on the deck unless you plug the scuppers. I have a 21’ Kenner that rides great but I’ll probably be getting a frontier soon just because the storage, drainage, and fuel tank all suck on my boat. Also i don’t know what is limiting you on size but the blackjack 224 is almost 24’ long.

Stay with 22 blackjack or 23 pathfinder
Used if available is fine. The frontier guys all wish they had a blackjack.

yeah, if i had 70k to drop on a boat it would be longer than 21'. a blackjack with a 300 would probably be my choice if i had to stay under 24'.

I think I'd have to be rich to buy a new boat that does what I like in today's market. Its ridiculous.

Yeah I suppose I’ll just slowly upgrade, the ole Kenner first, then a frontier, then maybe something a little bigger and faster. By the time I think can afford a big bay boat, the cool ones will all be 30’ long with 800 horsepower.
