Here's the deal.

Elliot Management which owns ~ 6% of Cabelas is an activist investor. Although Elliot is usually involved in the tech sector they are taking on this retail space.

They are the ones pushing to get the company sold. The stock has really suffered since 2013 when it was trading in the $70 range. Prior to this announcement it was traded at $35 which was a 4yr low.

The brothers that started Cabelas control ~ 24%

BPS is going to make a run at it but it could happen in several different ways.

They could let cabelas buy bass pro and Johnny becomes the majority shareholder in the end.

Either way there will still be bass pro and cabelas they will probably close a few of the stores that truly canobleize each other and look to squeeze vendors

This is going to do two things...

1. Quality of Cabelas products go to shite.

2. The consumers get screwed.

This. Is. horseshite.

I've saved up my Cabela's points for years to get a new bay boat.

If Johnny Morris ruins that for me I will burn all of Big Cedar to the ground.

Just kidding, I wouldn't burn Big Cedar to the ground.

Dick Cabela's died about two years ago, I wonder who gained control of his share?

Roger,
There is a SW here in Southaven. The store here is pretty limited on selection. Mostly name brand stuff, don't really have a store brand for footwear, and limited clothing line. They have decent prices on guns, but the local shops usually beat them out.
Their black friday sales are decent, but I am never in town for it.

Just curious, I'd hate to see a warehouse type store come in town and kill the local shops. A lot of business comes from summer tourist.

We have Cabela's and Bass Pro and two Academy's here and it didn't kill Spillway Sportsman, Bowie Outfitters, Jim's Firearms nor Hebert Guns. People spend $400 for an icechest nowadays, so lowest price isn't the deciding factor sometimes plus the big stores aren't discount stores either.

I hope it doesn't happen. Cabelas hunting and clothing products are superior to Red Head and bass pro has the better fishing selection.

I'm still wearing Cabelas brand clothing that I got in the 1970's. No shrinkage or fade. The only red head jacket I've owned was total trash.
I've listened to gun salesmen at both stores and the guys at BP could not have known which end of the gun to place on your shoulder. Cabelas salesmen have also bettered the price on scopes a couple of times - something the clueless clowns at BP could or would never do.
Pray thus doesn't happen

Holdings list has James Cabela with 11.2mm shares
and Dick Cabela with 5.7mm shares.

Looks like its his family

I wish we had Cabelas in Bossier vs. Bass Pro - as Bass Pro sucks arse pretty much. The Cabelas in Gonzales is super nice imo.

Not sure about other places, but both stores are bonded developments in Ascension and Livingston Parishes, so they couldn't just shut one down with out taking MAJOR hits. Last I read (a couple years ago) Bass Pro was on pace to pay off it's 30 year bond in 15 years, whereas Cabela's was actually delinquent on it's last two bond payments to Ascension Parish.

If this buyout becomes reality, I wonder what will happen to the two brand new BPS and Cabela's stores that just opened last year here in SW Virginia. They are less than 15 miles apart and both are brand spanking new.

Elliot Management owns 6% but is run by "The Vulture of Wall Street" Paul Singer. Singer is notorious for undermining majority ownership in traded companies and getting them to do his will.

He's described as a GOP backer but gave significant money to Obama. He plays both sides to get legislation passed, part of his unpopular reputation.

I hope this doesn't happen for many reasons but if it does, look for some other box store to rise in Cabelas place. Can't stop capitalism.
