Bandsaw

I have a grizzly 17" bandsaw coming in tomorrow. It's my first bandsaw so I'm wondering what blades to try. Right now I have a 1/2" wood slicer blade coming in for resawing and a 3/16th 4TPI skip tooth blade from highland woodworking. I'm thinking about picking up a couple of others to try. I'm curious to know what people are using and your opinions?

I really don't remember what mine is exactly but I think it's a wood slicer (or timber wolf) 3/8" 5 tpi or something like that.
You will absolutely love having a bandsaw. Either that or my miter saw are my most used tools.

Grizzly makes some nice tools. I've got a friend of mine living on the Northshore that does cabinet work and all his big tools are Grizzly.
I have a small woodworking shop at my house---about 750 sq. ft., but don't really have the room for some of their larger equipment. I'd love a 3 spindle shaper with auto feed, but that thing takes up more room than I'm willing to part with.
Besides, the tool costs xxx$$$ but the accessories can really put a dent in the old wallet. Often more than the tool itself.

Anyone have any recs for a good miter saw? I got into woodworking about a year ago. Now that I've established a feel for it I need something better than my harbor freight special.

I've got three miter saws, one 10 inch for small stuff and 2 12" for larger things like crown and big baseboards you find in older houses.
Both my 12" are compound miter saws and there are times I wish I'd have paid a bit more and gotten a slider.

I have a 12” sliding Bosch. It was crazy expensive (for a miter saw) but I can’t recommend it enough. It’s amazing.

What model band saw did you end up getting, thats my next purchase.
I have a dewalt 12" compound slider. Liked the makita alot as well but the blade positioning on the Dewalt is what showed me. LED light on either side of blade projects the actual shadow of the blade edge to edge vs. a laser that can be slightly off and only projects the center line of blade. Definitely save your money and buy a 12" slider which ever model you go with its well worth it.

This sounds awesome. My dewalt does not have it, can it be purchased as an add-on?

Dewalt DW716 is the gold standard here. Durable, easy to setup, and very accurate smooth cuts with the right blade. I do a lot of trim carpentry and sliding miter saws are never accurate enough, not a single design or brand has made one that will consistently make accurate miter cuts repeatedly like a non-sliding saw. Better off using the extra money towards a table saw if you really like woodworking.

I got the G0153ANV. I was looking at the 14" G0555. The G0153 is on sale for $875 right now. The 14" is $655 but the riser block kit is $100. So for an extra $100 and change I decided to get get one step up. It also has a 2HP motor compared to the 1HP of the 14".

anyone know the difference between a wood cutting bandsaw and metal cutting? Seems only thing is variable speed, would imagine that a regular wood bandsaw with metal cutting blade would be sufficient?

Years ago I worked in a sheet metal shop and we would have to cut heavy angle iron to wrap and weld to 16 gauge galvanized restaurant exhaust ductwork that attached to the hood. That saw was s l o w when compared to my woodworking bandsaw. ]
If they run too fast they take a chance of ruining the blades with heat buildup. We'd use oil in a squirt can to help with the cuts.

For a DIYer the main difference is the blade and speeds, you can cut light metal stock with that bandsaw and the right blade as long as you have variable speed control. You'd have to cut very slow though, you don't have coolant flow and if you use cutting oil you'll have a mess to cleanup before changing back to cutting wood. I know some get a cheap dedicated bandsaw for light sheet metal cutting. I personally wouldn't cut metal in a bandsaw I wanted to use for any type of fine woodworking.
