They are all over the southern Atchafalaya Basin/Belle River/Verret area.

How do you tell the difference bt a juvenile vs an osprey? Bc we have a lot of those down here too

Eta: if you whistle at them (like they do) they will fly in close to you to investigate

A juvenile bald eagle is solid dark brown. The white feathers on the head and tail don't come out for a year or so, maybe longer.

Check back on page one of this thread and there is a pic of a very young juvenile in the nest.

I've spotted bald eagles several times before in LA, but never in metro N.O. I'm sure some kids would enjoy seeing her at this easy access area behind Oschner hospital.

An osprey will have a white belly with the same colored (white) head with a brown bar through the eyes. Osprey are smaller too, but that may be hard to judge with no frame of reference. There are differences in how they position their wings in flight as well (if I recall osprey have a bent "wrist," and eagles are straight winged).

I've gotten really close to some osprey nests before, they take to the wing and give you the evil eye as they circle. Ha ha.

Yeah, Palourde is full of them as well.

I just looked at some osprey pics.. Not the bird I'm thinking of.. What is the one we have down here that looks very similar to a juvenile bald eagle? (brown head)

I've seen them regularly at Verret. They have a large one that lands in the trees right next to the camp.

Yeh.. Pretty cool when u think about us not even having them about 10 years ago or so.. Now they are all over the place

Eta: I remember arguing with some friends back in college about them... It was in 2004 and they thought I was stupid saying we had them down there..

A red-tailed hawk? Pretty much just go from the fishing eagles to the Buteo spp. around these parts.

Red-tailed hawks have a few color morphs, one of which is a dark morph. I've only seen one of these that I know of, and that was last year or so on a telephone pole alongside HWY 1 in Brusly.

We have a few different hawk species (some in different genera) that frequent the state.
