I have hunted/killed a few over the past few years... One piece of advice, their vitals are a little bit further forward than a whitetail's... A shot directly behind the front shoulder is still a kill shot, but any further back than that will be a lonngggg track... Some tough animals.

Yea, they are in a high fence pen type hunt most likely. "Guides" will no where to put you and they will walk out and and you shoot. Not much to it. Enjoy the camping, drinking and shooting the bull. That trip is more worth it than the actual hunt. Good Luck

I hear they are a fun animal to hunt given how much tougher they are than whitetail. What cal did you hunt them with?

He will most likely hunt them the same way they hunt whitetails in the area. We used to have some but have all since died or were harvested. They're delicious and make awesome mounts.

The first two bucks I killed was with a .270 and 130 grain ammo. Both were near perfect shots (Maybe 2" too far back) but resulted in approx. 150 yard tracks...

After that, i switched to my .308 Win. and the longest track I've had was about 50 yards.

I am excited about the hunt. I figured my 7 RUM shooting 160G Nosler AccuBond should be more than enough though.

Should be more than enough horsepower. If you set up on a feeder than it's like shooting a cow in a pasture but it's fun if you can spot and stalk them if the ranch goes for that kind of hunting.

Best eating on the ranch, unless they have elk.

I have shot a few over the years. They usually run in a heard out on the ranch in the hill country. A herd can DESTROY a hay field in a matter of hours. The meat is fantastic. I use my 30-06 and have no problems. My wife shot hers with her trusty 25-06.

Heard that backstrap is better than any beef filet you can buy.

They are strong but can be taken with a .270. We have had several walk with bow shots that would have caused trouble on a whitetail. Once dug out a 30.06 slug that didn't pentrate the front shoulder bone.

After you clean an axis, cleaning a whitetail will seem like a trout.

Where exactly in Texas?

This is a thread about Axis, not Nilgai.

Sorry, got the story mixed in my head. The deer was shot with the 30.06. While cleaning it there a slug in its shoulder that could have been something much smaller, certainly more than a .22 though. It still impressed the shite out of me.
