Are ACR's good rifles to own?

Anyone have experience with these?

Sure if you have the cash why not. It is a bad arse rifle with the ability to quickly change calibers.

To tell you the truth, it is probably way more gun than I need, as I don't own any firearms as of yet. I have been looking at getting a nice rifle that would be good for the range and in case Red Dawn happens. I figured if I spend more to get a really solid and modular rifle, that it would be better than buying multiple rifles in the future.
What are your thoughts?

Then definitely don't blow that much on your first firearm.
What kind of experience do you have with shooting?

Mostly pistols and some hunting rifle. I am not a hunter, but would like to shoot for sport. I just was never sure if you should sack up and pay more for a really good rifle that is so modular that you won't have a real need to buy multiple guns.

Well, AR-15 is the ultimate barbie gun. You can accessorize it till your heart is content. You can find them at various models and prices as well.
This model will run you about 800 and then you can add as many various accessories as you'd like.

Yeah, I'd recommend getting a basic ar-15 first. Buy a Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, Stag, DPMS, Smith & Wesson, or some other popular brand. You can get one for under $1000 and spend more money on accessories (scope, case, light, extra mags, etc) and ammo.
If you really like it, then you could go up to the ACR.
If you have piles of cash, then go ahead and get the ACR. It is definitely a fine rifle, but just a little steep in price.
I, personally, would rather a basic Bushmaster and then a tactical Remington 870 12 gauge.

Out of curiosity, what does a box of ammo go for the AR or ACR?

They shoot the same ammo.
Ammo is all sorts of different prices. You can get military surplus ammo pretty cheap though.

I can totally see why an AR would be a good first step. There just is something about the ACR that draws me.

That "something" is the ACR's badassedness oozing everywhere.

I always tend to be the type to spend extra money if I can use something for multiple applications, which is why the caliber swap, barrel swap, hell just about anything swap is so attractive to me. Is the AR as versatile in barrels and all?
I really don't know all that much, so i apologize for my lack of knowledge.

Yes the ar can be modified to virtually any caliber you want.

Read some reviews on them. I haven't read anything in a while on the ACR but the last that I read was that Bushmaster had not perfected the platform yet. Again this was over a year ago so things may and probably have changed.

at a gun show today, 500 rounds of federal 5.56 55 gr. was $169 and 1000 rounds was $320. B.O. (before Obama) that same 1000 rounds was consistently $399. So, it's come down a good bit after the A.O. bump that happened.

spend your time on m4carbine.net if considering this platform....avoid the advice posted above so far....bushmaster is not [i]milspec[/i.....seek knowledge my friend outside of this board

If you are in Alabama, come up to Vestavia and go to Mark's Outdoors. You can get an AR for around 535.00 and the 308 version for 785.00

Love this pic.
The "base" M4 shown is almost a dead ringer for mine (quad rail, flip up MBUS and Aimpoint clone).
I have a "stubby" though.
