I'm in the market for my first AR, and I'm a cheap bastard. I'm not going to spend $1000-1500 on a gun I don't hunt with, so don't bother with the "you get what you pay for" bullshite. I'm not taking this thing into combat in Afganistan. I want to spend as little money as possible for a good AR. If I had a choice between a "good" gun at $500-700, versus a "great" gun for $800-1000, I'm going with the cheaper. Tell me what you think about these two deals or any others you know of. $700 is the max I want spend. TIA. Bushmaster DPMS Oracle

They have some nice quality AR's in your price range. Smith & Wesson M&P sport was my 1st AR and it was a sweet shooter. I don't know to much about the DPMS oracle, but I do own a bushmaster 308 and its pretty much a DPMS and it's been a great gun.

I'm building my first AR. Only $300 in so far. I'd tell you to spend the money, you can't take it with you.

Don't like hearing this. Thought S&W was a quality brand.
After a little research, looks like building is the cheapest way to go. A friend tells me I can pick up a S&W lower for $130. Found some uppers from $350-400.

Don't go off of single anecdotal stories. There are tons of good reviews on S&W M&P sports and DPMS. Sure, you get a lemon every now and then. That's with anything. I had both in the days of the budget and they did fine.

I have a $3000+ rig that is honestly only a little more accurate than the $700 ARs. It will just go a hell of a lot longer and function reliably when dirty.

Bushmaster and DPMS are far from "shite" as another poster stated. Perhaps he has had bad experiences, or super high-end taste, but they are both good. "Delton" manufactured near Fayettville NC is a really good product for the price, which is cheap. Palmetto State Armory is manufactured here in Columbia, SC where i now live, and they make really good stuff at reasonable prices.

I've shot both DPMS and Bushmasters and while I'm not a carbon fan, the other bushmasters I've shot were FAR from shite. Got a deal on an MOE Dissipator that I couldn't pass on so I've got one of those now that I've run a lot of ammo through without a single failure. And I've shot DPMS that stacked bullets like a sniper rifle, but those were custom. Anybody that makes broad sweeping statements about AR's has probably spent more time online talking about them than shooting them.

As is always mentioned when a thread like this shows up, build it yourself.

I have to say that build it yourself is as commonly stated in ar threads as judge is in home defense threads.

Except here, it is serious. Build it yourself. Look up at the top stickied thread and look up gunsmithing....

And you should buy a judge!

My vote would be RRA over the Bushy, DPMS or Sportster.

RRA has a (limited) lifetime warranty. Bushy only gives a year. That makes a big difference to me, even if I never use it. They seem to think their product will last longer. warranty info
